I've been getting gout attacks for 20 years marra, although the 1st 10 years were misdiagnosed as early onset Arthritis as I mostly get attacks in the knees & ankles rather than toes. Because of the misdiagnosis it got progressively worse until most months I was hobbling roughly 3 weeks out of every 4.

I couldn't get away with Allopurinol either, it left me feeling weak & without much appetite. I'm on febuxostat instead now & it's been amazing. No side effects, no big attacks since November, just a few minor flareups that I've been able to either train with or work around.

It's my longest period of uninterrupted training since my late twenties & This year I've managed a Marathon, 20 mile road race, 16 mile road race, 4 ½ Marathons, 4 10ks, a 5 miler & 14 parkruns. I've actually signed up for this winter's cross country season for the 1st time in years as the cold & wet & long time before getting them properly warm & dry combination used to almost guarantee an attack but I'm fairly confident it's under control now.
Went to see the specialist today been referred to a podiatrist now. Apparently my foot shape is that bad that he is surprised that I haven't had more problems. I think I may be Forrest Gump.
I have three issues that aren't necessarily related. He thinks the gout will improve with medication and diet. The osteoarthritis isn't a major issue as far as he can tell and there's nowt that they can do anyway. He did say they would give a cortisone injection if I was in a lot of pain and was desperate to get through a half marathon. I doubt I would ever be that desperate to do one.
The foot shape is the major issue and I should be wearing insoles in my day to day shoes as well as my running shoes.

theres a company called Podfo that one of our best runners used , based in newcastle, anyway your shout but if going down that route maybe worth a try, dont think they are cheap though

like i say hes not meant to be cheap but a lass at our club was ruined and on verge of giving up and his custom made orthotics sorted her , she now runs for GB at masters level

It would have to be some proper Inspector Gadget type shit for me to reach that level.
As long as I can get round a half marathon without ending up with an elephant's foot I'll be happy.

tempted to sign up to a marathon for next year. I've already entered liverpool half, is it possible to upgrade?

They should, may have to pay an admin fee and the difference. I'm going to sign up to Manchester marathon and attempt to run sub 3 hours

manchester is another option. I know people running both of them. One worry with Liverpool is its just a week before my holidays and I'll probably knacker myself or summit.

Whats your current PB? I'll be fending off the street sweeper

Often physio's and Pod's are too quick to send you down the rote of custom orthortics - it basically easy money in flogging them to you. I full length custom pair will be 250-300 a pop and probably need replacing every 12-18mths depending on how much you use them. Have a look on YouTube for the 'gait guys' and some of the other 'foot tripod' stuff - it is possible to strengthen feet / arches etc and 'cure' issues like pronation over time. Fast fix orthotics are not always the best way forward.

Cheers. No way can I justify £300.

If you're not planning a running holiday you'll be fine.

3:11, I wanted to beat it this year but London marathon was far too hot. You've got plenty time to train, you'll do it in 4 hours no bother by then.

think i'm going to enter the brass monkey in Jan and see how fast I can do that in. Had a better time in me for Kielder but I was running with people.

Just noticed a clinical study for Osteoarthritis pop up on my Facebook if you're interested in taking part. We’re getting under the skin of Osteoarthritis - Synexus

One of those days when you feel like you can do no wrong.

5 miles in 38.37. Should really have kept on going and beaten my 10k besy, as felt as if I was flying along, but doing another half marathon on Sunday so max today was 5.
