The Homeless

No one's saying the problem would go away entirely. However having a left leaning majority in the HoC might get a few policies passed which helps alleviate the problem which is currently growing exponentially.

By your logic if the problem can't be solved completely then why bother trying in the first place. That's like saying if we can't sign Van Dijk let's just stick with these two idiots are centre half for good

Street begging started to grow as an ‘industry’ in the early 00’s, remind me who was in government then?

I’m not saying do nothing, I’m saying it will always be an issue regardless of who is in power. People can’t be forced to make the right choices in life and some will continually choose drugs and or alcohol over help.

I think if you lived a healthy life and looked after yourself, you would be less likely to be in hospitals so much. Also if you did well in school, were hardworking, ambitious and independent, you would probably be less dependent on government services. I find it ironic that people want so much government in their life, where they limit their freedom of choice then complain that same government are screwing them over. I mean someone actually posted about Karl Marx..wtf.

I'll take capitalism over any other system in the world.
How can you not see that capitalism is the cause of the homeless crisis? Marx critiqued it perfectly and with today's hindsight we can see he was right. I'll give you the people who tried socialism fucked up it if youyguve me ou capit has failed and caused immeasurable suffering more times than socialism.

They chased away the bloke who used to play the bagpipes I heard.

Funny how they all show up on a match day.

We should throw them into the river for a wash, the scruffy, work shy bastards!

Theyre always there just before match & just after. One match I was running 20 mins late, so was coming over bridge about 15 mins after kick off. Not one begger to be seen. Then after the match, they were all there again.

Was walking in town and a woman stopped me to say she was homeless and needed money to get to somewhere that was about five miles away.

Not only did she have to be homeless in a very specific place, she didn't want to risk jumping a train and the fine being sent to ... ..erm, where exactly?
Five miles? Should walk the lazy sod.

Sunderland has no homeless? Wow, there should be studies done into that as it must be the only large place in the UK, I wonder how it manages that.
Last time I checked there were two, and they were intentionally homeless having refused accomodation.

The beggars at the match are not homeless.

People complain about it but the only thing that will stop it is if people refuse to give them anything. But people are nice. People want to help others. There is no sign of this changing despite the awareness campaigns that have been done.

Centrepoint say they support 200 homeless people in Sunderland every day

When it's freezing cold, with snow, hail or sleet lashing against the windows, I know that, like many of us, I thank my lucky stars I'm not living on the streets. It's there but for the grace of God. If you think otherwise, that's your prerogative, but I'd urge you to think again....

Most of us, although we might not like to admit it, are one or two steps away from poverty and even homelessness. Personal and family circumstances can change quickly. This government's austerity policies are deliberately undermining the social fabric of society and the welfare state which all of us, at some point in our lives, depend on. It's depressing that some working class people show more empathy with the likes of millionaire tax-avoiders like Rees-Mogg than with the casualties of his Party's ruthless policies.

One solution would be to make sure the homeless were registered at a local level, provided with 3 meals a day and a safe bed for the night by law. Beggars could be arrested if they're not registered as homeless.

People should stop giving money to these beggars and give to a homeless charity instead. Even if they are homeless why should someone that's better at begging 'earn' more than those that are not by getting the good patches etc.

Agree. Except begging is illegal regardless of being homeless.

The old cruel to kind mantra, giving cash to beggars does not address the long term root cause of begging or homelessness. People should donate to charity instead. My opinion anyway. Neither begging nor homelessness will be helped by giving direct to a beggar.

Depends on your definition I guess. There are people that have somewhere to sleep but is not their home, such as a hostel.

There are no way 200 rough sleepers
