The Angel and the Tyne bridge are probably both more recognisable than any structures in any other Northern English cities/towns.

Possibly the most recognisable structures outside of London, although that might be a slight stretch.
I think the Liver buildings might give the Angel a run for its money.

But generally I agree - I cannot think of a more iconic image than the Tyne Bridge apart from maybe Edinburgh Castle. Nothing in Leeds, Manchester, Glasgow or Brum comes immediately to mind.

Having said all this, iconic landscapes will likely have nothing to do with Channel 4s decision.

The fact that it will be at the heart of a busy conurbation (T&W) where about a million or so folks reside - and the fact that you can get a train to London in 3 hrs - will be bigger factors. I presume.

C4 will move to Liverpool, Glasgow and one other place IMO.

Probably Cardiff.

Newcastle and Gateshead could not cope running a national broadcasting service from there - people won't move here and we do not have the talent in the NE to do it.
Thats bollox.

So they would move to Liverpool or Cardiff but not to the NE. ?

Imo the NE (I'm thinking everything from Northumberland down to Durham) has a lot more to offer than Liverpool.

Never been to Cardiff so won't comment - apart from the fact it is in a different country which may come into C4 thinking ?

Let's not forget that C4 had probably it's biggest tv success with the Tube - which was hosted at city road Newcastle.

Very few are.

And even more so when companies from London come here to do it.

How many are made in Cardiff, Liverpool?

What difference does it make if it is a London production company here to do it? It's still a prodominatley local crew, look at Vera.

You missed my point.

Firstly, Vera is produced by ITV Studios...most of the staff will be shipped up.

Just because we have a handful of decent people does not mean we have either the amount of people needed or with the skills required to churn out 100s of hours of programming a year.

That's horse shit by the way - the North East is a technology hotbed in the UK. There are hundreds of tech companies here...many of which are globally rcognised. For example Ubisoft Reflections have been based here for decades - produced games like Destruction Derby and the Driver series which shifted millions of copies. Then you have WhatCulture which has a huge reach across the globe with their content. Hedgehog Lab is a mobile app company based in Newcastle that develops apps for companies like Channel 4, Mitsubishi and are currently doing something with the NFL I believe. That's just three off the top of my head. Your comment is so wide of the mark and is disrespectful to the thousands of tech guys and gals that are doing some mint stuff for clients all over the world.

Tombola in Sunderland and Bede gaming in Newcastle provide the platform for meeca bingo and grovesnor casino online - big national gambling businesses.

It seems you want to belittle what we have here, saying a handful of people, come on.

I'm not involved in broadcast side myself but I know we have a lot of talent in the area. Many who have yo work outside the area as well as here so bringing more production here can only be a good thing.

Newcastle and Gateshead in Channel 4 bid

Newcastle & Gateshead "bidding" to get a Channel 4 hub located in their cities

"Tyneside was the "UK's unofficial capital of culture" and a "vibrant creative community... at the heart of modern Britain"

"There are a number of cityscapes around the world that are instantly recognisable - Shanghai, Sydney Harbour, New York - and Newcastle and Gateshead is right up there."

Stretching it a bit I feel, why do they have to "bid" for it? How much do they have to pay Channel 4?
I would have thought Durham skyline would be more recognizable than Newcastle personally. I have to laugh when they say shanghai when they mean pudong really which is maybe 1% of the city most of the rest of the city looks like an identikit Chinese city

I don't want to - but you aren't really accepting what I say.

Broadcasters in the NE are at the start of their careers generally - and that is fact.

They move to the bigger cities when they're more experienced.

You will not encourage people to move here for work in the media.

I assume you support Sunderland - look at the problems we have attracting footballers, you think we'll attract decent broadcasters/producers etc?

I think if you give the opportunity of work then yes can attract people no problem. It just seems a defeatist attitude to say its not possible. They move to bigger cities as that is where the work is.

Yes I support Sunderland and we struggle to attract players because of location and how shit we are.

So will they move to Liverpool, Glasgow or Cardiff if they move bases to those cities? It seems the options are:
  1. London;
  2. London or
  3. London
if you want to be successful.

Liverpool is commutable from Manchester where the BBC have a large base. Any indepents won't only work for C4.

The BBC have a large prescence in Cardiff and Glasgow.

It makes sense.

It's that kind of attitude that keeps the region down.

Mate, we aren't entitled to have stuff up here because we have a chip on our shoulder.

It's not as simple as that mate.

See my earlier comments about population size - diversity, tolerance, multicultures etc.

Surely if the best want to work and live in London then these cities will suffer the same problems as NE. All the best disappear to the big smoke regardless of the presence of BBC etc

They have much larger populations - and more going on.
But surely it is progressive and aspirational to look at areas previously ignored and develop those. Undiscovered talent and all that.

Look at Billy Elliott. If only he had a world class ballet school in Easington he would have stayed in the NE
