I think the Liver buildings might give the Angel a run for its money. The Angel and the Tyne bridge are probably both more recognisable than any structures in any other Northern English cities/towns.
Possibly the most recognisable structures outside of London, although that might be a slight stretch.
But generally I agree - I cannot think of a more iconic image than the Tyne Bridge apart from maybe Edinburgh Castle. Nothing in Leeds, Manchester, Glasgow or Brum comes immediately to mind.
Having said all this, iconic landscapes will likely have nothing to do with Channel 4s decision.
The fact that it will be at the heart of a busy conurbation (T&W) where about a million or so folks reside - and the fact that you can get a train to London in 3 hrs - will be bigger factors. I presume.
Thats bollox.C4 will move to Liverpool, Glasgow and one other place IMO.
Probably Cardiff.
Newcastle and Gateshead could not cope running a national broadcasting service from there - people won't move here and we do not have the talent in the NE to do it.
So they would move to Liverpool or Cardiff but not to the NE. ?
Imo the NE (I'm thinking everything from Northumberland down to Durham) has a lot more to offer than Liverpool.
Never been to Cardiff so won't comment - apart from the fact it is in a different country which may come into C4 thinking ?
Let's not forget that C4 had probably it's biggest tv success with the Tube - which was hosted at city road Newcastle.
