When do we start talking about Jos Buttler?

Is this last chance saloon for Buttler today, or do we think he's already gone? If his batting isn't good enough to keep him in the team then he surely has to drop out.

For years, England have favoured decent keepers who can bat over genuine keepers who maybe aren't so prolific

Alec Stewart was favoured over Jack Russell and then James Foster
Geraint Jones favoured over Chris Read
Matt Prior over Ambrose(?) [Prior was outstanding during this period so it's not much of an argument]
Jos/Jonny favoured over Foakes

There's nothing wrong with this approach as long as your keeper scores runs. You can put up with the odd drop, missed stumping or excessively high byes when your no.7 averages 40+

I have thought about it more and think he has to go. He is just offering nothing with the bat.

Foakes has a solid first class record, did a very good job in his 5 tests and is widely considered the best keeper

Me personally with the talent he has and the type of unfazed character he seems to be, I would give him more time than the average player and stick with him, but certainly understand and see the view of others who want him dropped.

That talent has never looked like translating into test cricket which is why I’d give up on him now, he’s played about 40 tests and has scored as many hundreds as Tim Ambrose and Geraint Jones, and less than Jack Russell!

He's a world class player, but he's not a Test match cricketer.

Of the three WKs, he's the weakest.

His batting can be brutal, but he clearly doesn't have a game against a red ball. He's spoken in the past about how he has no clue how to work with the "blank canvas" (his words) of red ball cricket and his brain works better with the formulaic method of white ball.

Let him carry on being world class in white ball, and have a red ball specialist for Test cricket.

I am aware of his record, but has much more talent than any of the players you mentioned, and when a player has that much talent imo you should give them more time than say the players you mentioned.

However of course they has to be a limit to that, and it possibly has now been reached, so yeah see your point.

I'd argue mate that in Test cricket, he's had far more time and chances than many would be afforded - solely because of his freakish talent.

Unfortunately at some point, you need to cut your losses.

Yeah good points mate, I realise I am the minority on this and fighting a losing battle :D

Yeah once again good points, maybe I am a bit biased and blinkered with him, as think a hell of player and wanted him to succeed at test level.

I completely see your point on it mate. But as I say, his glovework is by far the worse of the three fighting for the spot, and when you haven't got the game to get runs, you cant expect infinite chances.

It's a shame because he's a wonderful player, but I also worry about him becoming so obsessed with struggling in Tests that it affects his white ball game too.

Let him go back to enjoying his cricket and smashing the white ball everywhere, and get a more secure player behind the sticks for Tests.

I'd have loved for him to have succeeded mate. A freakish talent and he's always seemed a top bloke. Unfortunately I just can't see it happening!
Laters Jos.

A good 2018 after his 4th recall, but outside of that his record in all first class cricket is poor. After 40 tests, a lot of them as a specialist batsman remember, it's nowhere near good enough.

It's time to admit that he's a white ball player, the technique hasn't stood up to scrutiny.

Out of respect, I'd give him the chance to announce his retirement from Test cricket before Sri Lanka and sail off to the IPL.
