The original trilogy isn't special anymore, as they've been swamped by shite. And its only going to get worse.
i don't think they're making the films these days, with the target audience of the people who matched the original three at the pictures... the star wars batten has been passed to a different generation imho...

Even if that were true, there's no excuse for having 3 films written by different people, and each of them allowed to simply "delete" a story arc that hasn't been completed.

There's more than just one thing wrong with it all.

Just like Star Trek now.

Shite.

It's fallen behind Marvel though. I don't like all of the MCU films but they've got a good handle on setting up a film version of "canon" that distills all the various versions of stories and characters into something that works on film. Then apart from a few fuck-ups, they've mostly put out decent films that did a good job with the character story leading that film, while still tying it together with an overall story direction across the films. They're also getting quite good at matching directors to films and letting them do it their way within certain parameters, like Ragnarok and Black Panther.

Star Wars is a bit all over the place by comparison.

I was talking about the next main one but didn’t the original director of the Han Solo film get replaced with Ritchie Cunningham.

And is the Obi Wan film confirmed?

Yes, the original directors (Phil Lord and Chris Miller - The LEGO Movie/21 Jump Street) were replaced by Ron Howard.

There hasn’t been another origin movie confirmed yet. It has been rumoured that it would be a Boba Fett movie rather than Obi Wan.

I think Obi Wan is just rumoured but strong rumours I think.

I sympathise with the bloke who left Episode 9 on account of Rian Johnson screwing up the plot, but not that much because he was responsible for Jurassic World and that was shite

I've found an app that is showing this for nowt.

I didn’t mind the latest film but it’s criminal Disney let the director do what he did with Luke.

It was a movie made for the kids in the main, but since I'm in touch with my "inner child" I took it at face value and enjoyed it. It's hilarious how anal and vitriolic some folks have been about TLJ, absolute madness tbh.

Grrrrr this thread needs an ultra dislike button.

To be fair I absolutely despise it but it isn’t the worst Star Wars film made. It’s the complete mockery it made of what had gone before that pissed me off and the over the top comedy.

I’ve always been an absolute Star Wars nerd but that film has killed it. Going to have grow up now.

Bastards

I could write a dark as fuck Star Wars film, but I won't as it wouldn't be for a young audience...............Star Wars is aimed at kids, sad that the adults don't realise this (apart from me, cos I'm class and that ;)).

Empire Strikes Back was dark and that was the best one.

Your right of course, it is aimed at kids and as @errant has said thats who Disney are making it for .....

....but I don’t like it and it could and should have been much better.

Brilliant film I can play bomb the bass always.
Xenon 2 soundtrack too IIRC

Someone else other than Lucas wrote the screen play/script for the empire strikes back iirc.

My 5 year old kid was asking in which film does the baddie side win, and I always suggest TESB although it wasn’t an overall victory the empire came out of it strongly.

Just watched it again. Now that the disappointment and annoyance has faded, it wasn't too bad to watch. Some nice bits actually.

Still frustrated at how a few tweaks could have made a far far better film.

It might have been posted on this thread (and I might have said all this before, but I can't remember!), but search YouTube for 'Star Wars made in the edit'. It is a short documentary which shows how they took Lucas's original work and cut out a load of tedious bits that broke up the drama. They then added shots at the end which increased the drama. The end result was a shorter, more gripping film. I think The Last Jedi could really have done with this.

One thing from that documentary I did find really interesting is that the Death Star was never going to blow up Yavin 4 and the whole rebel base was never at risk. It was just sitting in space waiting to be shot at. All the shots of the tactical display of the Death Star closing are close ups because they were made at the last minute long after filming had stopped. Nobody in the control room mentions the Death Star coming near, the only audio about the impending doom is a tannoy announcement that was added after. It is something I have seen so many times and as soon as someone points it out, it is glaringly obvious.

In short, George Lucas was very lucky that his best mate was Steven Spielberg

Controversial comment: The scenes on the casino planet thing.
Came across as a total loads of shit to me at first - but on reflection:
- Points out how the empire / first order funds a society of elites who will in-turn suppress the masses
- Explains how the e/fo get all their stuf
- Explains that the resistance/rebellion are also implicit in this, as this is where they buy their stuff too

The code-breaker story / switch for other guy bit was absolutely shit though - typical of the film: Lots of good ideas, but small details ruin the overall product.
