I think they are both excellent. Would be siding more towards the US version if i had to choose but that's because I've watched that most recently. Will have to watch the original again soon.

Dwight in the American Office was how the Gareth character was intended for the original but when Mackenzie Crook auditioned, Gervais and Merchant changed the plan (IIRC).
