Revamp the playoffs

For years we had three up and three down and it worked but then then playoffs came along and it often seems to punish the team that is pushing for the top two but narrowly misses out, especially when it goes last game of the season. Other than playoff final, the playoff games seem not to have much interest other than the teams involved. Would it not be better to either scrap this lottery or change it to third and fourth bottom of the league above play third and fourth - think it may have been something like that at one point. Sunderland wil still balls it up just wondering what other opinions are - other than its just extra money out of the fans after paying for a season ticket already.
Used to be something like that and yes we did balls it up 86 or 87 ? we finished 3rd bottom in division 2 and had to go into the play offs with 3 division 3 teams, we got Gillingham and went out on away goals after the two matches finished 6-6 on aggregate. They scored the "winning" away goal in the 30 minutes extra time that was played, still think that was unfair.

I think the Italian League have a good system where the playoffs are cancelled if the team in 3rd finishes 10 points clear of 4th. It keeps the playoffs intact unless there's a really dominant team. I wouldn't mind expanding that 10 point rule down to 6th. So if 4th are 5 points behind 3rd and 12 points clear of 5th, then it just becomes a straight playoff between 3rd and 4th. It rewards the teams closer to the top of the league.

It’s always a good source of debate and as I said earlier, I’m probably in the minority who would scrap them. I’ve never been a fan of them and not just because we’ve failed so many times. Maybe they should adopt it in the PL to decide Champions League places? Top 3 get in - next 4 play off for the other place.
Aye, sounds like a good idea. I like the sound of that mate 👍👍👍

That sounds like a decent compromise

Revamp the play offs purely because is would've benefited Sunderland

You wouldn't give a shit about the play off system if we had been promoted 1st.

Genuinely pathetic.

Play-offs should be one-off games played at the ground of the higher-placed team (though they can surrender that advantage if they wish)

And no extra-time or penalties either. If it's a draw the team that finished higher in the league progresses.

Just revamp the league overall. Add on goals scored to the points total to encourage attacking football. And of course injury time is multiball time for added excitement.

Was brought in to add excitement to the game (and money of course) and it's worked well for both. At least it's still within the spirit of football and available at all levels. Keep the playoffs, lets play Charlton again.

Fine as it is. Sustains interest for more teams until the end of the season.

I would not go back to bottom teams being involved with top teams from division below. They will resent being there. Leave well alone.

Personally I hate the play offs where they involve a team in the league above. They're likely to be stronger because they've had a massive financial benefit. Just seems like a way to reduce the number of teams going up and down. Keep things fresh by having more going up imo. The play offs are one thing that I think doesn't need tweaking
IIRC back when this happened the advantage was assumed to be with the lower league team. The reason being that they'd been winning all season whilst the other team had been getting battered every week. I know things are different now with more money in the game and more disparity between the leagues but I reckon you could get some interesting ties. I think Brentford or Bournemouth would give the mags a couple of good games for example.

Scrap it. It’s a money making exercise.
The only people who want the play offs scrapped seems to be people who are not old enough to remember the turgid football not having them used to produce.

If you had a few runnaway leaders the teams in mid table had nothing to play for from New Year onwards and loads of games were glorified friendlies. The play offs keep the league honest for longer.

Disagree completely. I’m old enough to remember and still believe the top 3 should go up. It’s about the 3 teams with the most points for me. If it’s just about retaining interest in the season, why cap it at 4 teams? Why not have 2 up and the next 8 in play off quarter finals?
