Revamp the playoffs

Have 4th, 5th and 6th not worked hard all season like?

There's currently only 5 points separating 3rd from 7th. Third place will deservedly be an also-ran in there with three other also-rans.

There's a good chance we won't even finish third yet.
Well when there’s only 3 teams go up then the teams that finish outside of that didn’t do enough. Otherwise make it 6 up and down. I’ve already explained why I have the opinion I do.

Suggested format.....

5th plays 6th at the home of 5th in a one off game.....winner progresses to.......

4th plays winner of above at home of 4th in a one-off game.....winner progresses to......

3rd plays winner of above at home of 3rd in a one off-off game...winner promoted.

I appreciate there is no Wembley final and fewer games so EFL would never consider this. This system tangibly rewards your finishing place

16th place worked hard. The issue is that 3rd place did better across the season than every other team, except 2.
Well then if you're good enough to finish 3rd, you should be good enough to win the play-offs.

There's a very good chance we won't even be the side that finishes 3rd, so why the fuck people are twisting about the format at this stage of the game is beyond me.

Because, irrespective of whether Sunderland finish 3rd or 6th, people are offering opinion on the basis of fairness not what best suits their team.

How much money is there to be made really? Sky pay relatively fuck all for EFL games. To me the best part about it is keeping the season alive for about 8 extra teams.

It’s an exercise in making money. Always was. You like it. I don’t. Don’t try and sell it to me Chris. I think it’s a shit idea. I did at the time and still do.
 Who said I like it?! I hate the bloody things.

It is what it is though and it's pretty fair - this season, in league 1, potentially more so than usual, given the gap between the top 2 and spread between 3rd and 6th.

We might still be glad to be in them.

Not as much with an empty stadium.

Probably Sky can generate more overseas interest for the Championship play off with their self billed “richest game in football” nonsense.

I am not sure how they bill the League One play-off as it has little interest outside the communities of the respective teams.

It’s always a good source of debate and as I said earlier, I’m probably in the minority who would scrap them. I’ve never been a fan of them and not just because we’ve failed so many times. Maybe they should adopt it in the PL to decide Champions League places? Top 3 get in - next 4 play off for the other place.

I think the team finishing 3rd should definitely have an advantage. They should be the automatic finalists.

6th should play 5th. The winner players 4th and then the winner from that game should play 3rd.
I've no issue with the current format but would be interested to see this version. It could end up being tense for a team in 3rd who finish in poor form vs a team that go on a crazy run to finish 6th then going into the final on a winning run after beating 5th and 4th.

Yes, always is. If no tangible reward is given based upon your finishing position, I can't see how it's fair.
Right. So we've established that the only way to make the play-offs fairer is to not have them at all.

The thread is about revamping them however, not scrapping them.

I'd happily scrap them for what it's worth. I take slight solace however that they still offer us a glimmer this season. We are Sunderland though...

The money involved in the extra games any revamp/reduction would be difficult. I quite liked 3rd top play 3rd bottom in a one off match, how feasible that is now, particularly in the gap between championship and premier league i dont know.

Canny money spinner if you're down at the bottom and confident of doing the business against a lower level side.

The Germans still do it IIRC.
