Polis Costs

Outside St James is council land, the whole area around sol is private. Also with bigger away crowds, the club have had more games with Police inside the ground, which means more officers and cost, whereas Newcastle usually use stewards. The rate for an officer is the same nationally, just the numbers deployed are different.
They club night need to rethink about using more stewards.

doesnt seem to make sense though really, whether it is public land or private. in fact, if its private land, then it should be easier to have more control over how many police officers are needed.

i get the feeling that the chief of police at NP is advising sunderland council regarding the safety certificate, and royally taking the piss. the council can't argue with him, so just go ahead with it.

are you saying that the public roads outside of st.james park on a match day are not the responsibility of the club to keep safe?

Sunderland £347k
Newcastle £167k

Newcastle had 22 home games including a friendly, Sunderland had 24 including the Celtic game. Not sure how those numbers even work.

More worrying is at the end of the article where it says for the 9 Premier League and Championship clubs in London the cost came to £442k

How they hell have we paid more than double than the mags with half the crowds man?

The roads outside st James are Police responsibility. I don't know about safety certificates to be honest but I don't think they state any figure as to how many officers, are needed to police the ground, as I said I don't know.
the policing strategy will be discussed with the club's security though.

Police and local authority as i think they close roads around the ground on match days now (which i would imagine the mags also have to pay for). The difference is that this policing cost will be absorbed within the normal operational costs of policing and not chargeable to the club

Ok mate. Thanks for the info....starting to make a bit more sense.

Has anybody actually read that? It should be considered that the costs are higher for the games with the higher number of away fans. Celtic, Boro for example.

Over the course of the season, Newcastle will have attracted more away fans than we did.

Why do clubs have to pay for policing matches? I thought the police were employed to keep the peace in all situations, as per their job description....?

I think the reason the costs have been explained already, the Police are having to police private land with big numbers to escort away fans.
The club could reduce numbers and costs of they did the job inside the ground with stewards only.
I still don’t see how that adds up to double the cost of the mags like, something is away here. It’s about time we stood up for ourselves on all fronts.

yes but not the numbers in one go that Boro and Celtic brought. I suspect we will have had more big bills rather than a regular one size bill. They pay the same per officer. The club could just use more stewards on their land and not police. They say what they want.

As I said, the cost per officer is the same, however, without seeing the bill, Sunderland must request/require more officers to police their ground/land.

Escorting them, I think, won't cost the club, as it is outside the ground, however, at sol, they escort them into private premises. Also Boro and Celtic meant a big Police presence in the ground.

Do the away coaches drop on club or private land? That could make a huge difference.

Who? Us?

If it's us, the coaches drop on Barrack Road and the fans walk down. Public land.

No. Sunderland. It's already clear that there's far less private land around St James than the SoL, and this is probably a major reason why your costs are so much lower than ours. The more private land the police need to operate on, the bigger the difference. It's a disadvantage of a newer ground surrounded by land owned by the club. Had we been able to develop Roker Park to a similar capacity to the SoL, I suspect the policing costs for the two clubs wouldn't be very different, unless there's a huge difference in the number of police inside the two grounds.

If there’s a risk of bother between two sets of fans the polis will plan accordingly and put more officers on duty to be able to react ,
makes no difference if it’s on public or private land.

Said earlier in the thread that there is little to no Police presence inside our stadium where the Stewards look after the safety. The only heavy presence is outside the away turnstiles.

Is this the case with your place?

It makes all the difference about who pays it though.

Depends on the fixtures. I think a fair bit of the difference is going to come down to this.

is this 100% accurate?

I’ve said earlier this could get interesting , I’ve been used as a city centre resource in the past hours after a game finished, perhaps the finances for this switches at some point ,

Obviously lowly plods wouldn’t know
