Polis Costs

is this 100% accurate?

I’ve said earlier this could get interesting , I’ve been used as a city centre resource in the past hours after a game finished, perhaps the finances for this switches at some point ,

Obviously lowly plods wouldn’t know

Clubs have to pay for policing costs on their property, whereas the costs of policing public land come from the police's own budget. So, if you were on duty in the city centre that's public land and the public pays. If you were standing outside the away turnstiles at the SoL, that's on the club's land, and the club pays. Obviously, not all clubs own land around their grounds - it's probably a reason why London clubs seem to have low policing costs - if the pavement outside the turnstiles is public, it won't cost the club a penny.

Why do clubs have to pay for policing matches? I thought the police were employed to keep the peace in all situations, as per their job description....?
Is this a serious question? Do you think Glastonbury should be policed for free? Concerts at the arena?

Businesses that charge a fee to attend the event should be responsible for paying for security surely? Someone has to pay for it.

The access road into the hotel and pool belong to the club. I think the coaches come right up to the ground to drop off, I know they do to pick up at the end. It's always heavily policed there.

Could the relocation of the away section be contributing to the rising costs? I know when I've been there a couple of times before the relocation we were dropped off on an industrial estate behind the South Stand (Sheepfolds?)

Don't know to be honest. However you were still escorted to the ground by Police, so I suspect it wouldn't make much difference. Perhaps more due to the route to cover.

Seems completely unfair like considering the resources are put in place as direct result of the match so the clubs should pay imo

That's only one game though and you'd expect a higher presence. For the 'non-rivals' you'd think that's where the saving would be made?

We've already paid the police to do their job & outside the event, then yes it's up to them. Inside the event, then of course the organiser should pay.
I don't agree in paying extra to be herded like cattle and guarded by mounted police.

Yeah I was just answering your question but they will still escort off the coaches just not to the same extent.

But it has already been established that what happens on public land is not paid for by the club anyway.

Based on those and without looking at exceptions for the mags that would have us pretty close. Nearly £100k on a friendly and the boro!? Mad

Yes but factor in that we played a lot of teams that only brought 1000 or so fans when the Mags played Man U, City, Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton all with near 3k away fans

£16583 to police Newcastle vs Luton which attracted 47000 which 7400 were away fans. When Pools were in ££ bother earlier in the year, some of the police costs were asked for and revealed. It cost Pools £2714 to police the Gateshead league game on New Years Day, attendance of 3200 with approx 400 away fans. In a nutshell thats 85p per spectator for police. Newcastle vs Luton attended by 43000 more is costing 35p per spectator. I very much doubt it's the home office pricing these up unless Dianne Abbott is in charge.

Exactly plus it can't be based in potential trouble or number of banning orders as we all know the Mags have the most in the country after the horse punching derby. It doesn't add up!

Outside St James is council land, the whole area around sol is private. Also with bigger away crowds, the club have had more games with Police inside the ground, which means more officers and cost, whereas Newcastle usually use stewards. The rate for an officer is the same nationally, just the numbers deployed are different.
They club night need to rethink about using more stewards.
Newcastle's stadium is council land as well (and one of the stands owned by John Hall). Wonder who pays for the policing in their ground.

could just be a simple, old fashioned, SAFC style backhander between someone high up at the club and some police chief
PC Margaret Bryne?
