New Music Releases Thread

Pete & Scarlett is a grower. The single “Bad Dreams” was already probably my favourite track of the year, and I like the reworking of “Tomorrow” but it took a few listens for the other 3 songs to click.

Neko Case can do nothing wrong in my eyes. Not as good as last year’s New Pornos but it’s a cracker.

Just listening to the new Neko Case now.

Nor as instant as "The Worse Things Get........", but there's some beauties shining out already.

As a festival I thought it was organised superbly. Great line ups, location, accessibility.
Plenty of bars / food. Non intrusive security but enough presence to feel safe.
For £65 per day it was absolutely outstanding value I thought.
Role on next year.

I'm the same. I've given three albums a go over the years and they're at best dull, at worst unlistenable to my ears.

I thought his first two albums were brilliant. Excellent pieces of work. Couldn’t get into his last one at all.
Today after about 4 listens, the penny dropped on his new one and whilst I don’t think it’s as good as his first two, it’s a very very good album.
I do get why people don’t warm to him but I think he’s great.

There's a couple of things I still want to listen to (Julian H Cope and Carthy/Waterson) but the new and nearly new stuff I've listened to this weekend:

Mazzy Star - top quality! Sounds exactly like, well, Mazzy Star.
Kanye West - short but good. 3 or 4 excellent tracks.
FJM - divides opinion, comes across as a self important twat but, musically, he's right on the button here.
LUMP - bloody excellent! Amongst the best things Laura Marling has been involved in. Hopefully, not a one off!
Natalie Prass - her debut was excellent but she's moved into the genre known as bland here. Strong influences of Shakatak at times.
Neko Case - good album. The standout tracks are the duets. Would like her to make a duets album.
Juliana Dougherty - stark folkish indie rock. Reminds a bit of Sharon Van Etten, Julie Byrne and early Cat Power. Very good!
Phil Cook - gospel/blues/country melting pot. Reminds me at times of the recent Ry Cooder album. Well worth seeking out (as is the Ry Cooder album).
Modern Studies - this came out a couple of weeks ago. Sort of folk/shoegaze hybrid, which I'll call wooze folk for shits and giggles. Very lovely!

Been nearly a full week of this on the car stereo

You might like the DJ Koze album from last month if you're a fan of this. Two of my favourites of the year so far.

This is really high praise, I'm going to feel severely let down if I'm disappointed by this album now!

I never realised it was coming but the debut album ( 12 years in making ) from Ame was released on Friday.
The review on pitchfork slated it and I have to agree with them. Gutted as they’ve made some amazing tracks in their career.

The only slight disappointment for me is that it's only 7 tracks long and one of them is the end credits.

Listened to the new Julian Cope album on the way to work. It's good. As with the previous two Skellingtons, it's quite lo-fi and demoish.
