John Lydon

When I interviewed him ahead of the last time PiL played up here, he was very charming, witty, chatty and very, very pleasant. Not at all like his public persona.

There’s an interview on a London double decker bus where he’s quite pleasant.

I think his persona is more down to who he is with rather than him himself.

Half of me thinks it’s him being an awkward arse, half of me thinks it’s orchestrated for media attention, which is a huge selling point of the Pistols story. They created headlines.
that was my take on it when i read about it at lunchtime.

Aye, it’s either photoshopped, a freak photo or not him.

I was at the Academy swing PiL about 8 months ago & he was nothing like that.
I seen PIL at the City Hall, quite a few years ago, after Lydon had been on the music programme, The Tube, earlier on that day.
It was a canny gig to be fair, and Lydon was on top form.

John Lydon, Press Statement, August 31st 2021

In January this year, days before a worldwide press announcement, John Lydon was told of the proposed use of Sex Pistols recordings in a six part television series based upon a book written by Steve Jones. The project had been years in the making. Despite this, John Lydon was given just a few hours’ notice of what was to be announced.
Understandably, John, as the creative force of the Sex Pistols wanted to know how he was going to be portrayed and his musical works were going to be used to lend credibility to the series. Despite asking for details of the script or screenplay, John still does not know these details.
John Lydon did not ask for the recent proceedings. He was asked to allow the Sex Pistols works to be used without any prior consultation or involvement in the project. He took a stand on principle for what he sees as the integrity of the Sex Pistols legacy and fought for what he believed and continues to believe was right.
For more than 23 years the Sex Pistols have operated on the basis of unanimous decision making. The Disney production is the first time that the unanimous approach has been ignored.
It is disappointing that a High Court judge has decided that John Lydon is bound by an undated agreement signed in 1998, which imposes on the Sex Pistols a majority rule arrangement in place of the unanimous decision making process that has been followed for 23 years.
Looking forward, there is great uncertainty about what the majority rule approach might do to water down and distort the true history and legacy of the Sex Pistols. Time will tell.
Whatever Disney does, it is doing it without John’s involvement or creative approval. John is powerless to prevent any distortion of the true history of the Sex Pistols and whatever results will be at the wish of the majority only.

Lydons statement contradicts what was being reported about all this a while back..I read he’d been approached by Danny Boyle to give his input but flatly refused..I know some of the old punks who were there at the beginning were consulted..I know Jordan gave her input of how things were and when she found out about Lydons moaning she said well that’s just John being John.

It’s his own fault. Everything he’s moaned on about there is predictable to the average joe, yet he decided to pile money in. You can’t use all your money for a moral cause & play your wife’s care card after.

Im off to see his talk in soon. About 50 dates, £40 a pop. He’ll make a canny penny from that.

I don’t know how he’s financially ruined..when the Pistols reformed in 2008 they played over 100 shows worldwide..he’ll have made a mint out of that..i read an interview with Glen Matlock who said they were on 34k per show EACH..I know it’s 13 years ago but that’s £3.4 million.

He reckoned the jungle &/or butter adverts paid for This Is PiL. Sometimes the hard done by stories wear a bit thin. He could easily have got a record deal to do that record. Same way he’s got enough about him now to earn a shitload in a very short time. Gather up all the PiL lads, do a decent UK greatest hits tour & play loads of festivals next summer.

i can well believe that…he clearly is an intelligent bloke but i can also believe that he would get “arsey” if he wasnt pleased about what he was being asked etc…..fwiw i quite like him

Like you’ve already touched on though..he’s shit in his own nest big time..the Pistols was always going to be the ‘go to’ thing to make a bit money but the way he’s pissed the other three off now that won’t be happening again..he’s gone on like a spoiled brat..because it’s Steve Jones’ book that the Danny Boyle thing is going to be based on he’s gone in a right strop..he was asked to give his input to get it factually near as dammit but he’s gone on like a right bellend..the only one tainting the Pistols legacy is him.

Probably spend the next couple of years saying how there's zilch chance of them playing together again because of them stabbing him in the back.

Then announce a reunion tour for 2023.
