Yes you do. If you book a specific train and reserve a seat, then you pay for the seat. If you just buy a ticket and get on the train you pay for the transport, not a seat

no. ticket gives you a right to travel, not the right to a seat. the seat is complementary but the ticket reservation doesn't 'entitle' you to a seat. why do you think the guards never force people to move when they're in your seat?

its not like the TGV in France where when you pay for a ticket you have to travel in your seat (there's no standing allowed)

I've been on the kings cross to durham on quite a few occasions where the heating is stuck on in the carriage i've been on, during the warmer months. Thankfully the generous folk of GNER/ Virgin/ LNER or whatever they want to call themselves this week usually offer a free bottle of small water.

What if the train journey is part of their working day and they have to work?
I've been in that position - 1 hr NCL to YRK, 6 hrs in the office, 1 hr YRK to NCL - had to work on the train to justify only being in the office for 6 hours
