Just qualified for the last 16 of champions league with Sunderland. 1-0 down at the San Siro against AC and ended up winning 2-1

Man Utd have offered me the job, so I must take it. Will have to sign Sanogo and Akinfeev in January though and build from there. Man Utd doing very poorly sitting in 10th.

Chelsea keep offering me a job but they are a mid table team who's highest finish in the last 5seasons is 12th. Plus they have an average age of 28 compared to my Sunderland team at 22

My Wolves team is potentially class, however I can't compete with the bigger clubs due to have no dosh, Man Utd have cash so I've put offers in for my 4 most important players, Akinfeev, Sanogo, and 2 regens, in total it'll cost me £40 to get'em all, well worth it, plus Man Utd have the oldest squad in the Prem so plenty to sell.

£40m! not £40, they're not that skint.

Bordeaux, Rangers, Ajax, Porto and FC Copenhagen are swept aside and Athletico Bilbao are the 2011 UEFA Cup Champions, the 1st European trophy in the history of the club. Followed up 10 days later by victory over Athletico Madrid in the Spanish Cup Final, and getting the club away from relegation into a 10th place finish, make this a highly successful 6 months for Hugepenis at San Mames.

Back over in England. Former club Port Vale, having appointed my former assistant Ian Butterworth, hold on for the League 1 title.

Very good.

The set up at Bilbao is wierd. There are two reserve sides, Bilbao Atheltic and Baskonia, but they are more like affiliates than anything else. I can't send my reserves to play for them, and I can't promote players when I need them. Which means, in effect, no reserve team and no football at all for the players who can't get in my side. Rubbish really.

I feel a move coming on.......

 What the...?

OK, Sport Lisboa e Benfica just offered me the manager's job after they finished second to rivals Sporting CP in Liga Sagre (what's the translation of this, incidentally, League Of Blood? Anyone speak Portuguese?).

£3.5m budget, but they've got a decent squad and I fancy a crack at the Portuguese league because it sounds bonkers from what you guys are saying.

Having a canny little game at the moment

Took the CSKA Moscow job winning the league in my first season followed by a host of league cups left after one season there to take over at Everton winning the Premiership in my first season then left there after one season to go to anfield where i finished 4th before leving to take over Wolves

Bullshit this f***ing game like. Nottingham Forest in the Prem on a network I'm playing with a couple of mates (they're Arsenal and Man City), I decided to be Sunderland (we're in the 2nd season) and my poor away form has continued from last season. 1 f***ing win last year and a huge 10 draws. Set of wankers.

Anyway I currently have 1 victory away from the SoL (3-1 against Premier League champions Liverpool somehow ) and we're in late November, so I head to Forest thinking I can pick up a second 3 point haul on the road. How f***ing wrong I was.

The tossers are sitting bottom, 0 wins and 5 draws, scored 9 f***ing goals and what's the score at half time? Yes, 3-0 to Nottingham f***ing Forest. Final score finished 4-1 and I could've genuinely killed some fucknut.

Fyl you're an FM genius, how the fuck can I sort my quite frankly disgustingly awful away form? I've tried 4-4-2, I've tried the diamond, I've tried 4-5-1, I've tried the 'christmas tree' formation, but nowt ever f***ing works! The latter does alright for me like, I managed to scrape a few draws last season with that, but I can't turn them draws into f***ing wins. My strikers are Bent, Briand, Campbell and Milevskyi ffs, more than enough fire power.

finally won the champions league after 6 seasons at man utd and about £500m spent.
finished the season as PL, fa cup and CL winners. went on to wint he chairity shield and european super cup (5-2 vs city).
dismal world cup with england though. lost 2-1 to argentina in the first knockout round. gutted, really thought i was going to go all the way. next time its mine like, f***ing amazing young players. should win the euros

Difficult to say with just the information given, mate.

I would say that as long as you approach it sensibly (i.e. not playing a 6-0-4 formation or a 2-3-2-3 formation or something ridiculous) then I think your actual formation isn't really one of the more important aspects of finding the right tactics for your team.

It's possible to get results with any "normal" formation as long as you have the right players and the right staff (very important as they're with the players all day every day in training, so their ability to motivate the players and keep a disciplined mindset do have a bearing on whether your players will perform). Determination, Motivating, Discipline, Man Management. These are all important key skills for staff.

Are you adjusting your player instructions to fit the strengths and weaknesses of your individual players?

An example... although I prefer to play with out-and-out wingers, tearing down the lines and banging crosses in, I don't have any strikers that are particularly good in the air at the moment (although I do have 3 that are fantastic with the ball at their feet) and a limited transfer budget, so I brought in a couple of veteran (34-35 year old) superstar playmaker-wingers who can't run for toffee anymore but have great anticipation, great creativity and great passing skills and use them to supply killer balls to the feet of my deep-lying strikers from out wide.

Another example... I prefer to see my fullbacks getting forward and putting crosses in, but it puts centre-backs under pressure, so I only tend to have them playing an attacking role like that if I'm against really crap opposition, or I'm already ahead by 3 goals at half-time, or I'm behind and desperately need to press for a goal like in a cup competition, or the opposition have had a man sent off or are playing a through-the-middle formation like 4-1-2-1-2.... basically if it's safe to do so or I'm desperate then I use them as attacking fullbacks, the rest of the time I set them to defend so that I don't get exploited down the flanks, even though I would prefer to let them get forward whenever possible.

Now, the exception to that rule is if you have world-class fullbacks/wingbacks who give you real attacking potential when they get forward.... but then again, if you have fullbacks like this, you probably also have world-class centre-backs capable of covering for your fullbacks getting forward.

Another example... I prefer to have 2 central midfielders, one attacking, one defensive, but again, you can only get away with this against weaker opposition. The stronger the opposition, the more likely I am to go for a pair of defensive-minded MC's instead, leaving the forwards and wingers to do the creative work while the MC's just keep the centre of the pitch stabilised.

Anyway, the point I'm trying to get across is that getting your tactics "right" is a much more complicated process than a lot of people give it credit for, and what you want to do and what you have to do to win this match aren't necessarily the same thing.

If I'm struggling to get results, then I'll start scoping out my next opposition by hand... check out their defenders and find out where their weaknesses are... no point playing a slow target man against slow tall defenders, whereas against quick short defenders it can be devastating... (and vice versa... quick strikers playing on the floor against slow defenders who are good in the air will work much better than it will against nippy defenders).

Check out their fullbacks to see if their wings are going to be easily exploitable or not, check out their forwards to find out where their strengths lie and play to frustrate them.

Then there's press conferences and teamtalks, in which you need to be aware of your players' morale/mindset and adjust your responses accordingly. If they feel like they can't be beaten, you need to bring them down to earth and get them focussed. If they feel like they can't win a game and morale is low, then you need to build them up and give them confidence and an arm round their shoulders until the results pick up.

If a player is regularly underperforming compared with the ratings you know he's capable of, then go to the press and say you're disappointed with them, and if someone performs terribly in a particular match, you can give them warnings and fines for poor performance. If your whole team is underperforming for an extended period, you can get your captain to call a team meeting to discuss it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but if it doesn't I see that as a sign that I need a new captain.

Also, you should look to keep an age-balance in your team.

Older players don't have the legs anymore, but are generally more intelligent players for having all that experience, whereas younger players might have all the legs and skill in the world, but won't be as mentally strong.

So, it's all well and good having a team full of young future stars, but without some old hands around, they'll crumble as soon as things stop going their way. (Like Leeds in real life).

Like I said, from the info you gave me it's near-to-impossible for me to tell "where you're going wrong" and everything I just said might be stuff that you know already, but hopefully it will give you an idea of my mental approach to the game.

Above all, roleplay it.

Don't try to beat the maths of the game, don't try to beat the programmers, play the game as if you're a manager of a real football team and the players and staff are real people. That's my advice.

Discipline, motivation, morale, determination, focus. Maintain these, and everything else should fall into place.

7 years in now and it's became far too boring. Winning 34-36 league games each season, winning EVERY cup including Champions League. Might give up on FM10 now
