The Fishing Thread

Whities off Roker pier were class when it was frosty, mackerel strip off the summer, you couldn't fail.
Pleased to hear that . I thought the whities had gone for ever . Where were you using the mackerel strip from ? I'd like to get the grandson into fishing before he gets a sniff of the hairy clam and goes all to hell.
One of the few fish that are decent from the microwave.
Never thought of that .

Was years ago mate, it's a pity you didn't ask a few months ago, mackerel fishing is class and ideal to get someone into fishing. Having said that I think Roker pier is shut (not certain like) fantastic pier for fishing.
I'm sure someone will have better advice than me.
Clean bottom (not that, Sandy bottom) and fish at night.

Still plenty whities to be had off the rat house and that in winter and you tend to get a good stamp of them off the ratty. November onwards usually especially if there’s plenty colour in the water.

You’ll be able to buy mackerel from the tackle shops but it’s not as good as fresh caught what you’ve frozen yourself , bluey, squid will get you plenty whities aswell but macky is king.

All our local piers are closed. Even the Groyne at South Shields is shut. But you can fish by the Turtle on the Groyne.

Tipped with ragworm
I've had plenty of fish on velvets in the past mind.
Father Cornish would bait the pots with them too. Smash the back and pop them in.

I’ve not done enough fishing this year like.

Had a week down woodlands with the family and had four good days fishing.

Gets a bit boring for me fishing the match lakes when your just catching the same stamp of fish every cast. I get more enjoyment out of the bairn catching fish and watching him tying his own rigs mixing his own ground bait and pellets.

Must admit the Commercial Pools are not for me.
We live very close to Boddington Reservoir and it’s fished by so many Northern based Anglers with daft match weights.
Your lad would love it as they are big Carp and relatively easy to catch.
Some monster Pike in there mind.

Always preferred the Rivers myself.

That’s all I fished as a bairn mate the river wear.

Didn’t catch much but the odd brown trout and eel. Loved it though spending time with me grandad while he was asleep half the time on his deck chair.

Always remember once he was flat out and the tip went round and normally it was always him reeling fish in so I left him asleep and brought an eel in and he woke up as I was landing it haha.

To be honest Bairn likes any kind of fishing

Sounds magical Mate.

My Grand Dad got me into it. Made me a glass minnow trap then I had a small 7ft rod and caught bleak then progressed onto Gudgeon and Ruffe.

Remember the day that it “hooked” me.
Fishing a small worm on a Float. They used to pump the water from Didcot power station into the Thames, it was warm and there was a concrete outlet and it was a fishing hot spot.
Caught 2 Perch and 2 small Bream.
At the time I used to read Mr Crabtree an illustrated fishing book and couldn’t put it down.
The power station is now decommissioned however the outlet is still there without the water being pumped into it.
I often stand on it looking down the river with my mind locked on happy childhood memories.
Great that your lad is into it. Unfortunately both mine have had a go but not taken it further. Pity you were not closer as would take you and your lad out.🎣

I still remember the old 12 foot rod we used it was stiff as fuck cork handle. Heavy metal rod rest or cut a branch off a tree if we forgot it.

Cairns tackle shop in Herrington burn. Used to take me up Friday after school for pint of maggots and if he was flush a couple of bombs for ledgering.

Used to sleep at grandparents Friday night up early Saturday with a few pek sarnies off me grandma.

Walk down to the river. Chattersaugh bridge underneath and the thought of catching and excitement I still get now the day before fishing a morning of.

Grandad sitting in his folding deck chair and learning me how to tie the most simple of knots.

I remember he bought me my own rod it was just a small thing and a bubbly float fishing the margins for Gudgeon and if lucky the odd perch.

Memories I will never ever forget. We still talk about it now.

Aye I used to get bored in the match lakes pleasure fishing.

Plenty of whites off Hornsea marra. Bloody nuisance at times.
Better than catching nowt though when other species aren't showing
You from down that way?

I’ve been down that way quite a bit during the summer for the hounds.

They don’t half go on the light gear but sharp gets boring when you can’t bait up quick enough 😂😂
