Driving and phones

Well, they’ve tested it and it must show slower reaction times. Either that or there’s a typo on the infographic.
That's my thought. Unless you're very handy at typing one handed on a small touch screen without looking, I can't see how that can possibly be less of a risk than chatting on a phone.

Either way, it doesn't matter. There's no excuse for using a phone while driving. Especially with so many modern cars having hands free as standard. You can get hands free kits for pocket money these day. If being slightly over the DD limit warrants a 12 month ban, which is only right, then phone use certainly should.

BTW, I don't know if this is common knowledge, but the ban only applies to cellular devices. Walkie talkies and mobile radio hand held mics are exempt! Obviously, the laws regarding dangerous driving/due care and attention still apply.

As I said above, if you put your phone in a cradle and change your settings to actually show messages on the Home Screen, rather than “message received” you can read your messages and decide if you need to pull over and reply or not without touching the phone. People aren’t going to stop using their phones so it’s the best solution.

I have maps on every journey anyway in case there are roadworks or queues to avoid.
I agree with the last bit. I have Google Maps on my dash screen, the moment I step into the car.

As for the first bit, having your phone in a cradle is just as bad as holding it, if you're reading the messages whilst driving. Either get your phone to read them to you or put dnd on. There's no excuse for looking at your screen and reading texts whilst driving.

Dangerous driving wouldnt be used unless there were a catalogue of other driving. Careless driving possibly but not in proper control of vehicle is probably most appropriate and is the offence thats been used mainly when people have been holding their phone

It’s definitely a young driver problem in the main. Boils my piss. There’s no need for anyone to ever be on their phone whilst driving.

It should be an instant ban. Hundreds of people would be alive right now if it wasn’t for distracted drivers using Facebook or Instagram.

Worst I’ve ever seen was a young lass in a VW texting whilst on the motorway. I wouldn’t have noticed if she wasn’t swerving around her lane.

The worst offenders are lasses in Fiat 500s, lads in Golfs and white van men.
f***ing menace lad

Welcome move or a other cash cow?

About time I say, although I disagree how you can't check your phone whilst stationary at red lights for example

There’s a gadgie on YouTube called cyclingmikey who goes about London on his bike catching out people on their phones and other poor driving. Thought he was a knob at first but he’s actually quite good. Always stays calm and has a canny hit rate at court. People lose their rag with him and he doesn’t rise to it.

Bloody brilliant news.

Checking your phone at lights is also very dangerous. People, especially kids, cross between cars and if you aren’t paying attention, it’s very easy to knock them over.

Just keep your phone out of sight and wait until you’re home. Nothings important enough to have to use it whilst driving.

Depends how long you’re driving. If it’s 8 hours a day then stuff can be fairly important. Although I use speech to text CarPlay these days, I still send dozens of messages while commuting.

if you're checking your 'phone, how do you know when the lights have changed or a cyclist has snuck up on the inside in your blind spot and you're turning left? better all round not to even check it at all. what's so important?

Nah he's still a knob, more of this will hopefully put him out of business, either that or he gets flattened
