Durham on miners gala day.

I’ve been going for years until the last couple. If you’re claiming you’ve never seen a bit of bother, you’re either looking through rose tinted glasses or frankly lying.

I've been going regularly for thirty-odd years. There's been the odd scuffle but nothing you wouldn't see in any city centre on a busy Friday or Saturday night, and it's rammed with cops so they don't last long. However it's best to avoid the racecourse after 7pm when the wrestling sometimes starts among the charvers, but the main event of the banners and marching bands has long finished by that time so the vast majority of people will never notice this.

Posted this on the other thread:

Think I have missed 3 in 35 years and in that time I can honestly say the amount of bother I have seen is minimal, can not wait bus leaving Blackhall at 07:45

Cracking day out despite all the snobbery you get on here, yeah there is a load of people drinking on the streets etc but it is all good natured. We have gone down a different route of trying to fill the banner bus with families to try and get the younger generation into it and have managed to get a decent amount on the bus and others making there own way through.

Would definitely recommend going even if it is just the once just to experience it.

You’ve obviously never been according to @houghton cut head.

No trouble ever apparently
I haven’t seen a single bit of bother. Between spoons, outside pubs as the bands March past, down to the speeches, then back into town for some bait, one last pint then stagger on to the 20 bus at about 1800. Never seen any chew at all.

I wonder if he explains why he was such a staunch Brexiteer?

Or if he’ll explain why in a time every single person in the country is struggling, he thought striking with an average wage of 31k was the right idea. I keep hearing not everyone is on 31k, however to make that an average, some have to be on way way more.

Agree to disagree.

I’ve been to loads over the years (my dad was a power loader in wearmouth for 27 years until it closed).

What I have witnessed in recent times is people who have no affinity with mining (apart from their grandparents working down the mine) using it as an excuse to get pissed and off their lips.

Oh dear, yet another who has fell into the "average/mean wage trap" nonsense that the right wing media has churned out.
The dispute is about enforced redundancies, job cuts, rostering and other topics that the membership voted on to withdraw their labour.

Okay so if they scrap the redundancies and job cuts they’ll stop striking?

Will they fuck

Aye blame the media mate

“Let’s strike lads when everyone is struggling, that won’t make us look like *****”

The majority of unions are led by egotistical maniacs

The only bit of bother I'd seen was a bunch of rightwingnuts causing a scene with their "for Britain" flag singing Tommy Robinson songs. They got hooked by the police later on apparently.

They then went crying about it on Facey like a bunch of babies. They went looking for a reaction, and got one. Boo hoo.

And the increase in weekend rostering and subsequent drop in wages that they are trying to enforce?

Ah so it is about money

The fact is most people have little sympathy when they are striking but on salaries higher than nurses carers and real front line workers.

The whole country is struggling due to the cost of furlough etc, they couldn’t have timed it worse.

My brother is a home cater on 19k, worked throughout the pandemic, had covid twice. Is he striking? No because he knows it’s pointless atm.

It's about terms and conditions.
That is what a strong union can negotiate for it's membership who are getting screwed by shite employers.
A bit like why the miners got organised all those years ago, and got better terms and conditions - which is quite relevant to this thread.

And most people agree with the RMT disputes, not the other way around.
