Bollocks. If he was willing to order a nuclear attack then he wouldn’t give two shits whether or not Ukraine was in NATO, would he?

The only reason to fear Ukraine joining NATO, is to fear war with the west. If he didn’t fear war with the west, Ukraine joining NATO would be completely insignificant to him.

Sounds like the EU Parliament intends to recommend “applicant status” for Ukraine tomorrow.

Putin has really fucked up here. There’s no obvious end game. All he’s done is cripple his economy, and unite the entire free world under the “Putin is a shithouse” flag. To the extent that even the Chinese won’t vote with him at UN level.

NATO seem to be emboldened. Using NATO airfields to launch missions will likely inflame Putin. It could potentially pave the way for Ukraine to launch other operations from outside (And stop Russia destroying assets on the ground)

Also 70 planes is a fuck load!! I thought the EU was giving them about 5

Give Putin a victory now and the nukes get threatened again in 5 years over something else. I have 99.9% confidence that he won't nuke anyone whilst NATO isn't threatening and if he did want to nuke someone would relieve him of his duties one way or another. Under no circumstances sell Ukraine or anything else out.

Putin, and Russia in general have a massive grievance over what they perceive as their humiliation internationally when the Soviet Union collapsed. That's a huge part of their motivation

Right now they are being humiliated again in Ukraine. This may well make Putin more aggressive not less, and encourage lots of Russians to back him

Someone said earlier in the thread, and I’d be inclined to agree with them, that the only way this will be deescalated now is if Putin is given some sort of victory or at least the perception of one. Like you I don’t know what that could be.

I guess the alternative is from an uprising in Russia but if that was to happen then I can’t see it being for quite some time and I dread to think of the damage that will be done in the meantime.

When they don’t even have a free press it’s going to be a lot easier to manipulate a population with propaganda aimed at the West. At least we already know that we won’t be getting the full facts in this part of the world for various reasons.

Will the Russian people be questioning why social media sites have been blocked for days now?

Putin wants puppet regimes in Belarus, Georgia and Ukraine. Georgia didn't apply to NATO but Russia still went to war against them. Belarus have no intention of joining NATO but still have a pro-Russian puppet regime

All of that nonsense about NATO expansion is a just an excuse for Russia to take action, an excuse easily believed by those who back appeasement

Any appetite to joint NATO is largely borne out of the threat that Russia poses and the aggression they continuously demonstrate as you say. No matter what way you look at it, Ukraine and/or NATO didn’t start this.
