The Fishing Thread

Difficult to prove scientifically.
However what I can say from experience and has happened a few times, particularly when younger I have lost a fish, lost hook and line and caught it later less than an hour later with my hook intact which clearly was removed.

I guess demonstrating that it never put them off going for the same bait again.

What I can say is I always use rigs and line on my hooklength lighter than the main line. If I do lose a fish they haven’t got the float or weight trailing.

In the main Anglers are conservationists.
Those that leave litter in the banks should be banned for life, absolutely a big no.
I use barbless hooks and a lighter hook length. Also inline running rigs as well so leger or feeder can slide off if snapped.

off down thirsk to Woodlands fishery Thursday for a day out.

Week Friday a day going for the elusive Barbel on the Thames.
Paste already in the Freezer.
Real sad that the resident shoal have disappeared. This thread got me looking back at a few photos today.
Some cracking double figure Barbel a fair few seasons back.

Tight lines my friend.

I shall bore you with my events of the day when I return mate.

already the cogs are in motion regarding bait and tactics.

been doing well on the method feeder as of late. Sonubaits chocolate orange 2mil pellets for the feeder with a tiny amount of grounbait mixed in and double red or red and white maggot on the hook.

can’t wait to get out again even though it’s only been a week haha.

Make sure you do.
Looking forward to the summary.
I’m not confident to be honest as no real flow or colour in the River.
Long drive to blank :)

Have you used that method at woodlands?

Do they cast ok? They look light.
They cast perfectly, its a micro-lure kit I got in Canada, also perfect for drop-shotting 👍
First fish I caught on the kit was a 1.5 Lb tiny jack that fought like a tarpon, got him on a rubber frog dragged across the surface weed.

As if anyone would share their favourite marks! I will however share the fact that I recently switched to Berkley Trilene (from some Daiwa rubbish) and it's like night and day. Really strong line with a noticeably reduced diameter.
Diawa line is crap. Even at 4 or 6lb mono I much prefer Bayer Perlon. Looks nicer and not as stiff as Diawa stuff.
Ah mate last week I fed a short line and a long line. Had lake to mesel. Fish a Chuck on method feeder with Sony airs chocolate orange mixed with 2 mil pellets mixed in.

fed the bull rushes to the left and had some lovely fish close in.

must of had over 20 fish and a lovely day.
Sony airs? Misspelled Sonubaits? They're choccy orange stuff is doing well for me last few times I've been out. Green betaine groundbait with a white wafter pellet seems to be doing well as well in a few places.
Seen a bit about this Fjuka gear but I've not done much with it yet

This.
We've done litter picks around the coast, and the shit left at fishing marks (especially Cullernose) is a disgrace. Most of it is left by "fishermen"...bait wrappers, loose line, hooks and of course their food and drink remains.

As for conservation, I'm proud to say I got wrasse banned from our weigh-ins, both Opens and club matches. If it's not going to be eaten, why keep it ? We also introduced the rule where flatties must come to the weigh-in in a bucket of sea water. Anglers are encouraged to at least try to keep them alive so they can be returned.

Every little helps.

Winds me up how these lazy people discard their litter in a natural habitat.
When I pack up, I have a quick look around my swim and clear up all the litter in a bag. Sense of pride surely.

Some of those “jelly” lures cast a long way.
Really heavy and sink fairly quickly. Decent set that mate.

Had one once virtually raising it up and down virtually 1cm from a Pikes jaw.
Would it take it?
In a weedy swim thus couldn’t moved it from a side. The Pike didn’t take it.

Love floating lures.👍

Never caught a pike in Sunderland, but always read magazines about them, First time fishing a small stream down here had three in an hour just walking and casting into likely looking spots 👍

Small Mill pond in a field down here. Fed by the River Cherwell.
Caught 5 in it last season from lures to dead bait.
Farmer said I should have killed them but I walked downstream and released them :)

Whats the funniest thing anyone has ever hooked?

Mine? I was fishing down the lane at Sunderland docks one night (when it was open to the public). Those who know of it know theres an 8 ft concrete wall behind you, and where you fish is only 6ft wide, so you end up putting your gear over the wall to cast out. You have to watch out though, as people walk behind the wall.

Anyway, I put my gear over the wall and cast out. As the lead went sailing out, I notice something red flapping about on the end of my hook length. As I started to reel it back in, a bloke appeared looking for his woolen bobble hat, just as I reeled it up the dock wall dripping wet .
