Moving back to Durham - City or surroundings villages?

Romaldkirk is a real spot, expensive for something really nice, Barningham is a real quiet place up from The Morritt Arms, a bit far from Durham though. Shincliffe is lovely, again heavy bread for a good place maybe a smaller kip depending on budget. Sedgefield Morden both nice with the right place .

I know what you’re saying about the studentisation of the city. Lot to weigh up, need good schools, sixth form, which the city obviously has (albeit Johnston has a waiting list). Outside of there Parkside at Willington has good ofsted ratings. We can go outskirts like the areas you’ve mentioned, just the houses are so much smaller than out in the villages.

Going to have a drive down next week, take refresher tour round the area.

Parksides supposed to be good nowadays, daughter starts there next year. I live in the nearby metropolois of Hunwick

I'd recommend the villages further South nearer to D such as Heighington, High Coniscliffe and Piercebridge

Cotherstone! God damn it!
Also this area around Middleton in Teesdale is very nice other than poor broadband, Barney if you don't mind living in a small town

After twenty years of being away from ol’ Durham Town looks like I’m heading home.

I still visit my folks there so still feel in touch with how it’s changed, I’m wondering how people find the surrounding villages these days though - it’s ridiculous how much more house you get for your money. I know there’ll be detractors, but what are places like Langley Moor, Meadowfield, Bearpark like to live in these days? Also drawn to Willington, love Weardale and looks like lots of decent new housing up that way.

Cheers!
I'm exiled away but love Weardale too. You could try Philadelphia, Success, Shiney Row, Easington Lane, Bog Row, Dubmire, Quebec, Toronto, Close House, Page Bank, Browney, New Brancepeth and Ushaw Moor ,Esh Winning,
if you are moving from down south, i.e. York and all points south you'll be able to buy a street. Good luck.

Near Pity Me
And Co-operative Villas

Take a look at Consett.

By no means the prettiest place but it's got most things, a decent leisure centre, most shops, Barry's Bargains and it's well connected by bus to most places. (Including a direct bus to Sunderland for matchday!). House prices are pretty reasonable to.

Lived there for a few years and found it pleasant enough as long as you avoided the pubs after about 10:30 on a weekend.

Bish is the future

Definitely trying harder than most places to be on the up, but theres a bloody long way to go!

I've got a mate who lived in Stanley, but is now married and living happily in Consett.

A bit like British West Hartlepool

Parkside has always been decent to be fair. I'm amazed to hear that it had a reputation of being rough 20 years ago which was when I was there.

Hunwick is canny. Used to play cricket for them.

I was rough in the 60's when it was known as Willington Secondry Modern, full of no hopers. I lived next to it on Hall Lane Estate until 1966 when I left home.

I was fortunate enough to go to King Jmes Grammar but all my mates went to WSM. It was full of scratters with no hope.
