New Music Releases Thread

Spider Bags is superb. Not quite as I’d expected from Arkle’s description, but probably for the better.

First half of the album seems to show a different influence on each song (I could even hear a stoner rock influence in the opener, I could hear Tom Petty, some blues influences, hardcore, alt-country), then the second half of the album they’ve thought “Fuck it, let’s go full on cowpunk!” and filled the rest of the album with sleazy country-fuelled garage punk. Love it!

I didn't think my description was accurate. The one thing I did say, though, is that it's an album of two halves.

The Rough Trade email suggests I had a mare here. Missed new releases from The Beths (Kiwis geeting campared to Alvvays and Courtney B), hipsters' choice Tirzah, Miles Kane, Ethan Johns and Death Grips. Also Giant Sand's recrecording of their debut album.

You missed the Proclaimers new one as well!

Listened to a bit of the debut album from the Vryll Society today. It's seems decent on a first listen. Young scouse band, bit Tame Impala ish.

New James album is f***ing shit.

Bodega going down better here

Depends on whether their labels have decided to nominate them. Full list is here:

Mercury prize 2018: Noel Gallagher, Florence and Arctic Monkeys shortlisted

Nadine Shah, King Krule or Sons of Kemet for me. TBH, of the big hitters, Arctic Monkeys deserve to be on the list.
From that list Nadine should win. Wolf Alice is great but the debut was a better album.

Bit mystified why Let's Eat Grandma isn't on there.

That Coral album.

It actually annoyed me. I know they aren’t cutting edge or anything but haway man. It’s properly shite. There’s a tune where they keep singing “She’s a storm breaker” at least their last album had 2/3 decent tunes.

I really like the Gabe Guernsey album mind. The opening track really reminds me of I Believe it’s magic by Mick Smiley. The Ghostbusters film tune. Anyway I enjoyed it.

Hookworms was the glaring omission I reckon.
Must be the only person on here that isn’t fussed on that Hookworms album.

It's up there with the best of the year for me. Wasn't a fan previously...
Can’t get away with it. Loads of people I share tastes with really love it so I’m surprised. I’ve just put it on again but I’m not getting it sadly. It might end up growing on me.

I really wanted to like the album, I hear all these great things about it, but I just can't get into it. I have listened to it a bunch of times to see if it would grow on me, but it just hasn't and it doesn't... just not for me, I guess.
