Gabe Gurnsey album is good but I don’t think it warrants the massive praise it’s getting. Whilst there’s some great stuff on it, It’s a bit long for me. Much better albums from that genre this year imo.

Right then, my considered opinions on the new stuff I've listened to from the weekend:

Spider Bags: missed from my list. Kind of folky, punky stuff. Pretty good, particularly the second half.
Gabe Gurnsey: I'd pretty much agree with @mad cyril about this. Some of it's great but he could have dropped maybe three tracks and made a more coherent album.
Gulp: enjoyable. Basically a continuation of their earlier album, electronically tinged slightly hippyish indie pop, but it doesn't have anything as good as "I Want To Dance" on it.
Elephant Micah: intriguing. A bit folkish, a bit Low-ish, a lot of space and slowness on this. Seems to be a grower.
Daniel Bachman: a mix of primitive guitar and droney, post-rockish tunes. Very, very good even if one or two tracks make GSYBE! seem like Steps in terms of approachability.
Amanda Shires: Americana which gets a bit trippy at times and a bit poppy at others. Worth a listen.
Helena Hauff: This is cracking! Rhythmic techno, which is in turns both sinister and warm but always enjoyable. Also, good to cook a curry to. My album of last week.
Michael Nau & the Mighty Thread: Quite nice. Uncut described him as part Springsteen but mostly Lambchop and that seems about right.

This sound like my kind of thing, I’ll check it out.

I’m very pleasantly surprised by Amanda Shires, it’s a cracker. Disappointed by Houndsmouth, Down By Law was decent if a little slow at times.

Helena Haydn and Michael Nau sound interesting. I’ll check both out.

Aphex Twin dropped new track today. I’d describe it as a ‘challenging’ listen.

I thought Spider Bags might be up your street...

Is that 'challenging' by Aphex Twin's own standards or generally?

Goid question. I’d say generally. Aphex Twin fans will like it. It’s not his most commercial work but from his most experimental either.

So, this week in New Releaseland, albums from Enuff Z'nuff, Erra, Golden Drag, Il Divo (woohoo!), Jake Shears, Jason Mraz, Kodaline, Robbie Fulks and Linda Gail Lewis, Shooter Jennings, The Love Language, The Magpie Salute, The War and Treaty, Tomberlin, Stella Sommer, Kathryn Joseph, Odetta Hartman and The Coral.

    You are joking right?

It sounded like someone smashing up instruments to me.

Tomberlin and Odetta Hartman for me but, yeah, it's a slow week.

  12. Ok I’m exaggerating

    But it’s a class record

That’s grim. I’ve not listened to them in about 15 years but I might give The Coral a go purely because there’s nothing else.

Hoping Apple Music throws up a surprise in the “For You” new releases section tomorrow (like it did with the AJJ rarities album a fortnight ago).

The Coral's album got 5/10 from Uncut, which has put me off a bit...

New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down.

Should be shown on BBC tomorrow night. It was a great hour or so of music.

Kathryn Jospeh's the only thing that interests me there. Never heard of here before the Out Lines album last year but I like what I've heard.
