Books or a Kindle?

Just gone back to books of late. Not sure why, I love the clutter free aspect of kindles. Problies because I'm a bit worried about The Man having all this info about me. Daft, I know. But for similar reasons I'm thinking of going back to a paper diary.

In a way, it's the opposite for me. You don't express your identity through a Kindle. You do through the books you display in a bookcase.

Most of my books are in storage, but here in Spain I've already filled a six-shelf bookcase. If The Man - or anyone else - is curious about who I am, it's there on the shelves.

Where is barter books? I love a good rake around, old school style, bookshops
It's in old Alnwick Station. Lovely building, and the cafes in the old waiting rooms with roaring fires are lovely. I'm sure you'd like it if you like a good rummage. Take some old books and then you get some credit for the ones you see that you fancy.

I'm having yet another cull of mine at the minute. But also of other stuff - clothes, china. All part of the same thing as going a bit anti-digital: reduce, simplify.

I can highly recommend the carrot cake! I've got a huge bag of books ready to go there soon myself. If you see a short wifey hogging the crime section - that'll be me.
Or my Mrs as that is her favourites as well.

Good idea the trade in of books. I normally just give them to a charity shop in concord.

Well stop that right now! You can even take their books back to them. I've been going for years and all I've ever paid for is some of their lovely biscuits to bring home. Be prepared as it's rather big and you can spend ages there. Bigger than most libraries these days (if you can find any open) which is a sore point with me as I used to work in one.

I'm in. You've sold it to me.

Just had a delivery from the works of a few books, on the second world war, cricket and football.

For some reason, they sent me two copies of a book about bletchley park, codebreakers. I only requested one.

I've given it to the Mrs' crocheting friend

I've now got an image of a little wifey crocheting something out in code. But then, I've had a little drink... :D

She is as daft as a brush, when she comes around ours.

I slag her crochet work off and she can't stop laughing. She and her hubby are st John's ambulance people. Mad as hatters the two of them

I switched to Kindle about five years ago. Stopped going to bookshops, stopped buying books.

Last year I bought a book unavailable for Kindle and read it. I'd forgotten the pleasure of that, and of going into bookshops and making new discoveries.

Now I'm multimedia. I have actual books, books on Kindle, and audiobooks on my MP3 player.

Often I'll alternate between all three formats for a single title - all have their advantages: sat in a chair, a real book is best; in bed at night, a backlit Kindle is ideal; on a walk, audiobook.
Plus you can often get the audiobook for just £2.99 when you buy the ebook

Just for my info, how much are these kindle things and the best ones to buy?

I know there is an internet etc etc, before the smart Alec's, jump in.

Just like a chat with people on here

Make sure you make the right choices. I've been ruthless in offloading stuff. Mostly I haven't had a second thought. But there are some things (including books; mostly books) that I now regret getting rid of.

Simplification is all well and good...but if everyone lived minimally, we'd all be conformists. Stuff is what makes us who we are.

Nobody on the planet has exactly the same books as me in their bookcase. But I'm sure many people browsing my bookcase would recognise a kindred spirit purely through the books I own.

Both.

I've got a bedroom full of books and a Kindle app on my tablet. It depends on where I want to read as to which format I prefer. For example, on holiday I like the Kindle on the plane as it's less bulky to carry and I can also play games with the bairns on it. I'm usually sharing a double bed with the youngest, so I can read the Kindle with the lights out and not disturb her. I prefer books round the pool as I can't see the screen well on the tablet in the sunshine and it's only a couple of quid loss if a book gets wet compared to the expense of damaging a tablet.

I've just bought a kindle paper white ( after my original kindle died ) Think it was about £100 .
Advantage of the paper white is you can back light the screen so on nights like last night when I couldn't sleep i could just pick up my kindle and read without disturbing him
