New Music Releases Thread

Really liked the first single. You never knew is decent aswell but the album is largely forgettable
I found it a grower. Still disappointing with a lot of filler compared to the debut but nowhere near as bad as some reviews.

Just back from Cambridge Folk Festival so only catching up with new stuff (i.e. Arcade Fire) now. Starts well, sags in the middle, finishes well also.

Folk Festival stuff of interest (newer bands at least, Shirley Collins, Frank Turner, Loudon Wainwright III etc. are all good but are what they are):

The Furrow Collective: four folk vocalists including Alasdair Roberts. Much better live than recorded!
The Rheingans Sisters: two sisters (unsuprisingly) mostly playing violins. They play a combination of traditional French and traditional Scandinavian music, mostly instrumental but two or three songs with vocals. Exceptional!
Coven: a feminist folk supergroup/collective. Basically, three acts coming together and doing a mix of new (Coven) things and their own songs. Again, really good!
Mawkin: west country sea shantyish folk rock.
Moxie: Irish band, playing all instrumental stuff. I'd describe them as prog-folk. Surprisingly entertaining!
Fantastic Negrito: highlight of the weekend! Prince is the obvious comparison in that there's a combo of rock, blues and funk. Cracking performer!
The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians: sort of does what it says on the tin but does it very well! Syrian folk and classical music.
Lau: not exactly new. Avante garde electo-folk. Been around for years. Beautiful!
CC Smugglers: I think this lot get played on 6Music? Enjoyable live but they could turn into Mumford & Sons fronted by Lee Evans.
The Eskies: Brecht/Waitesian blokes from Ireland. Entertaining!

Not necessarily for everyone on here but the Sun Riah record is superb. Female singer songwriter in a folk style with a harp, think Joanna Newsom or Julianna Barwick
I really haven't been able to get excited about all this folky stuff but a good reminder to go and listen to some of the wonderful music of Sun Ra.

Not a lot getting released tomorrow. First new Randy Newman album (other than film scores) in 9 years), Mystery Skulls, Dan Wilson (singer from MOR rock dullards Semisonic), Briana Marela (no idea who she is but Alex Somers produced her previous album), Third Day (for the Christian rock fans amongst us), Warm Digits, the re-release of Lal and Mike Waterson's hard to find folk rock classic Bright Phoebus, Soccer Mommy, Nick Heyward, Steve Adey and Myra Davis/Beate Bartel/Gudrun Gut.

As far as new things I have listened to are concerned, the Sudan Archives EP is excellent. African flecked R'n'B/electronica.

That's absolutely woeful. Soccer Mommy despite the minging name are "ok"

I fully expect / hope the new Warm Digits record to be one of the years highlights.

Seem to have been out of the loop with new releases this year. What are people's favourites so far?

Listening to the new Father John Misty, think it's excellent. Also the This is the Kit record is class.
