Yeah you got to the semi finals one year I think didn't you?
Yeah we have been to Semi's and Quarters, to suggest we have never been able to compete  especially (don't take this the wrong way) coming from someone who's club has played a total of 4 games

Well if we are digressing completely then yes, that is all true. But getting back to the point in question (gold star, Europe, Mickey Mouse etc) people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. 4 games in an actual Mickey mouse cup before most posters on here were born. That's your European pedigree in 138 years. Fwiw the Cup Winners Cup 1/4 finals that year included the football giants Glentoran, PFC Beroe, Magdeburg and PAOK. I'm sure you will be back up there soon though lads

Don't talk pish, we were world champions while your mob were still having charity games held to keep them going. That's a fact you can't crawl away from while dressing up an invitational tournament that Europes 'B' clubs weren't interested in as some pinnacle of triumph as there were some 'really good clubs in it'.

At the point in time when we were in the Fairs cup where were Sunderland? I believe you were relegated! Back in the day, way back in the day when the football association was still a baby you were good, but the way some of you go on it was only yesterday. Yes you won leagues (and no one can take that away from you) but there was only a handful of teams competing, and the format was different it was still very much amateur.
However you can only compete with the opponents that is in front of you so I take nothing away from you. but just like us you have done fuck all for decades, at least we have competed in Europe in my lifetime.

This is still no reason to punch a f***ing horse now is it ?

Arguably. You were piss poor.

So basically, nothing from the old days counts until we come to a time when Newcastle finally had the upper hand, then it is worth recording. OK, it's one viewpoint. So if 1969 is the start point of 'history worth recording' then since then you have won nothing in terms of competitive trophies (the ICFT being an invitational with bizarre non-football entry criteria) but we have won an FA Cup, our modern trophy room may be small, but yours is empty. Meanwhile you've played some European games but lifted nothing and most recently can barely remember a derby win over us and are in a lower league for the second time in quick succession. Removing 'ancient history' does your mob far more harm than us when it comes to comparison. History doesn't give a toss about 'nearlys and played ins' Look at our astonishing third place in the league record - but it counts for nothing.

The point that I was making is that you referenced:

That has ZERO relevance to us winning the Fairs cup. The same as you being relegated when we won the fairs cup has ZERO relevance.
The other point was you lot claim it a tin pot club because the rules were different to how they are now and the fact that "no one took it serious" well back when the FA was in it's infancy and you were winning leagues the game was still amateur so the rules were different to how they are now, so does a club winning the league once under the current laws of the game equal a club who won the league once with the old rules? I personally would say YES you can only compete within the laws and rules of the game at the time.
Thirdly History is grand, and should NEVER be discounted but personally and perhaps selfishly I would take European nights at the Nou camp over the knowledge that my team won the league before I was a twinkly in my Grand fathers eye.

But we can go to the Nou Camp anyhow. I've been to see Barca play, big f***ing deal. I'd choose experiencing a last minute winner at St James' and watching your fans implode yet again over traveling to Barca to watch my team get beat.

Can still picture it mate, a sea of flying bodies. A last minute winner, away to your rivals, is about as good as it gets.

Perhaps Man Utd fans have experienced similar against Man City, I don't know off the top of my head, but to beat your rivals 0-3, 0-3 and 0-1 (last minute winner) away from home in consecutive seasons is something to behold. And to say you've witnessed every win in the flesh and be able to recall that experience whenever you like is priceless.

Aye the wins against Barca and Juve and the 2-2 in the San Siro were rubbish results

The semis and quarters of the UEFA cup weren't much fun either. I'm only 34 and remember all those games well.
