No! wasnt Charlton a midfielder?..I wonder if they could segregate the goals out so only ones scored in qualification and tournaments not meaningless friendlies against pub teams........Stats are stats and he deserves the accolode the numbers imbue but he aint the greatest in my book! Charlton as a midfielder fekkin brillient but in my mind Jimmy Greaves was the best goalscorer for england and in this case the numbers do lie!
tbf Rooney hasn't always played as a striker and the International teams in the 50's and 60's could be a mixed bag. I remember England hammering Turkey by a cricket score in the 80's, never happen now.

spot on, people forget how good he was.
Fastest thing off the mark I have ever seen on a football pitch during that WC and then the first game of the next season where he destroyed the scum...............

Greaves shearer then lineker. No doubt that Rooney will get the record but the other 3 u always thought were dangerous when playing. Rooney seems to get his spot as we have nothing better.Owen just misses out due to catologue of injuries screwing his career

I'm not sure how many goals Bobby Charlton scored against San Marino, Malta, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg mind.

Nah, Rooneys not the greatest ever......top 5 max for me.

Actually Charlton scored loads in meaningless friendlies against crap opposition as we played less competitive games then..........

You can argue the point both ways its just football has changed ............

Michael Owen..............

lineker had games similar to rooney
Gary Lineker

8-0 away I think ........Bryan Robson scored a hat trick..........

Because people love to hate modern day English footballers (unless they play for the team you support)
You may have a point, personally I think it's because in the modern day we're constantly bombarded with how great and brilliant everything in football is (overhyped) therefore people have a tendency to dismiss facts and figures and to a degree rail against what we're constantly fed, but as I said stats don't lie.

Do you think the same of Rooney?
Yeh rooneys a definite gonk too haha, Altho he's been an average player for seasons now. If he played for a less fashionable team than Man U, there'd be a lot more question marks over him

Plus in times gone by players weren't such wankers, they were far more in touch with normal life, the new generations are on another planet to the rest of the world and act accordingly
