From experience i fully understand what match fitness is at this level and it's very hard to replicate in training. No matter how hard you think you're training and how fit you believe yourself to be it still comes as a shock to the system.
That said, once your core fitness is there it should only take half a dozen games and a bit of determination.
I'm starting to think the same as you. Is his "fitness" already up to scratch but his body isn't quite? He just seems off the pace.

Im going to call BS, Piston.

You can't even train yourself to pre-season fitness, never mind match fitness.
One year 2 or 3 of us had had enough of the pain of pre-season training so we decided to get "super fit" in advance. We were out every day, running timed laps and each successive day we always had to beat the previous cumulative times. No cheating, everything was to defined distances and by the clock and recorded in a book. Every exercise was as it should be performed, no cheating.
We had a few places in the area where there were long ranges of steps to run and hop up. Any press up punishments were in batches of 100 absolute minimum, often on reduced fingers and/or elevated feet.

We arrived for pre-season thinking we'd sail through. Within 20 minutes it was back to square one. Only a professional sportsman will understand when the lining of your stomach comes up. Horrible thick green slime that would stick to anything. Stuff comes up from as far down as your feet.
I will say this, when there is nothing left inside your body to come out through your mouth, then you are ready to procede to getting "match fit".
For those few weeks everyone had butterflies the night before and on the way to training. Before it started you wanted the toilet a hundred times but couldn't go.

It wouldn't be worth me trying to explain the pain.

Just sounds like an active imagination to me mate.

We had a lad that worked for us that was In the army for a short time. He could describe in detail, tactical roles and methods In which had supposably partaken even though we knew full well he hadnt.

When working abroad we found him on the roof of the hotel with binoculars. When asked what on earth he was doing he began to describe fine details of the story that said he actually didnt work for us as it was his cover for the CIA and that he had been asked to do reconnaissance.

Seems similar to that to me, but I could always be talking nonsense.

In hindsight, if you had to pay £10M for Ki or Rodwell, who would you choose?

I think Rodwell still has massive potential. But he carries such a large English premium. And currently, Bridcutt is a better option imo...

We bought the badge but forgot to check the service history. Hooked. :/

I never played to a high level but I can vouch for shitting mesel, pre-season. No matter how hard you tried to be well prepared and ahead of the game, the pain was always the same. And I was a good trainer! You should have seen the fat boys suffering! :)

Not sure of the reason for this thread right now. The lad only got 2 mins on Sunday so nothings changed since he last played. Think he'll come good but will take an injury to someone to get him in the side atm

What next for him?

Seems a vicious circle. Needs games to get his fitness and game up to speed. Plus needs to completely rebuild his confidence.

Yet we can't afford to give him it really without jeopardising our overall results.

The fact he got a token role with a minute to go yesterday to use up time says it all.

Not sure what will become of him here. We need to either throw him in and have a shot at getting him back to somewhere close to the player with the potential he has shown to be or he needs to move on.

Doesn't suit either us or him considering we paid 10 million quid for him and he moved here to play for him to be on the bench for the foreseeable future.
Said it before and will say it again. He can play in the under 21 side as an overage player and get fit that way. I'm sure it's allowed especially as there is no reserve league these days.

True but a bashed ego might be counter productive :/

I cant see his quality. I am not a kneejerker and always give players a chance and will continue to do so. However I have never seen real quality where I am thinking, wait till he is fit and we have a player on our hands. Nothing stands out for me apart from he seems decent in the air. £10m he has shown absolutely no signs he is worth that imo

I've never seen anything in Adam Johnston but he has his uses ;)

As it so happens ive done time in the armed forces too. There was a thread on here a few days ago and cornishmackem lives right near some of the places we used to do specialist training. He'll probably be able to confirm i knew enough detail to show it wasn't a bluff.

I would say there were a few times in the armed forces where we did things and there was similar levels of physical apprehension just before doing something i knew would hurt. Difficult to compare directly but the most noticeable thing about the armed forces was the general misery and coldness being outdoors for long periods before high level activity as opposed to a hot shower and a fast car home as a sportsman.

As i said, i can describe many parts of the activities but i'd be wasting my time trying to describe the pain.

Welcome to the brotherhood!!:)
You always knew what was coming when the jokers stopped joking and the loudmouths fell silent. The uneasy calm before the storm.

I could never understand how so much body lining could come out of an already "fit" person. It wasn't like we'd completely let ourselves go the times we didn't do "pre"- pre-season training either.
It just seemed to make no difference whatsoever.

Its called confidence. Playing in a side that wins brings confidence - he's not been doing that.

He's also been asked to pplay a role that doesn't suit his strengths so that hasn't allowed him familiarity to develop confidence.
What strengths?

Where would you play him then?

In hindsight, if you had to pay £10M for Ki or Rodwell, who would you choose?

I would rather not pay £10m for either of them in an ideal world

I am convinced that it's mainly down to confidence and his willingness to take responsibility... possibly work rate too. He needs to demand the ball more and just do more, he is anonymous way too much.
A huge amount of any player's game is about confidence. More so than the attention it gets.

As others have alluded to I don't think it's general fitness he needs.

It's premier league match fitness, mental fitness and confidence. I don't know how he can build that unless we throw him in.

And im wasting my time as to if you're a fantasist, even if you were you wouldn't be able to admit it. Really not my place to be pointing fingers when I have no idea either way, so you have my apologies.

On the positive side it is the form of the other players that has been keeping him out.

Gomez in particular had one of his best games for us, miss aside.
