Would you challenge racism/homophobia at the game?

Re the OP:Depends where I was.
If I was at the SOL I would challenge it.
If I was a tourist catching a game in Belgrade then it probably wouldn't be the smartest thing to do.

I once couldn't get in the toilets in the south stand because there was a group of about 20 lads having a fag, and they would not shift, threatening me when I said I would shop them. I reported this, because I was busting for a slash, and they were blocking my way and poisoning the smell of pish with fag smoke. The stewards said sweet fa. I eventually managed to push my way through. Anyway, no ones feelings were hurt, and I only pissed a couple of dribbles on me pants.

I don’t know if I would say anything but I hope I would. These type of people should be banned from watching us.

So he hasn't had the balls to say anything but puts it on twitter. Couple of points for me;

Don't go on Twitter and say you're going to do something, just do it.

Why is he speaking to the other fellas directly, does he know they're on twitter but is scared to name them or is he just trying to sound tough.

We've got fans saying don't sign anymore africans when the fella in question is French ffs

Off course it is ffs, you're suggesting all gay people are soft.
The bloke on twitter isn't the problem here.

Or that it doesn’t matter.

I’ve reported racist abuse at the ground before on two occasions. Stewards hoyed them both out. Not sure if they got bans or owt though.
"I wasn't offended by it, so it's OK"

Fuck off, until language was hijacked by "Gay" people, puff also meant being soft.

And dont even consider calling me homophobic. My best mate down here plays that way

I would definitely say something, but I think it's obvious from my posting history this an issue I feel pretty strongly about.

Couple of years back I politely asked a couple of blokes sitting behind me to stop using racist abuse. Said ‘ come on there’s no need for that.’ When they persisted I said ‘ if you don’t stop I’m reporting you to the steward.’ They shut up at that point. I have an advantage in that I am an old lady so they were unlikely to set about me.

Well done you x

Calling someone a ‘puff’ is usually not a homophobic slur, more likely questioning their ability to withstand a hard tackle or whatever.

I’m all for moving with the times and updating our idioms to not be offensive but what am I to call someone who is acting like a complete dunce since most epithets describing stupidity are no longer deemed pleasant? (Even though being unpleasant was kinda the point)

So instead of saying ‘shut up you moron / cretin / retard / **** / [insert alternative objectionable adjective here]’ am I supposed to say ‘shut up you person lacking the requisite intelligence to participate gainfully in this exchange of contrasting postulations’?

Similarly when a player takes a tackle and rolls around like he's been shot, do I say ‘get up you frail person as you clearly lack the necessary level of robustness required to allow you compete manfully and with full effect in this match’?
You could call him a "straight" or "hetro"

It depends on what the individual deems offensive. I expect bad language (and often use it myself) enduring poor performances. You can give a player shit without having to make it about his skin colour, so it should never have to be about that. I personally wouldn't be offend by a comment about someone being soft if they were called a fairy/puff when they bottled a tackle or were rolling about on the floor but maybe others would. Perhaps that makes me a bit homophobic. I'm not an ignoramus and do understand the traditional connection with effete homosexuality but I know gay friends who use the same expression in a similar context. Is it the same as black rappers using the N word? They can but I can't?

Maybe I should book myself onto a diversity workshop?

"Get up you soft hetro!" will be my new go to shout of abuse.

Yes, I would and I have - I go with my kids, although they are getting older now. I don't mind the swearing because that is always going to go but if someone is racist I will tell them to pack it in - only happened once with my kids there and that was in the Premier Concourse and I did tell him to pack it in which he did.

Done it a few times but never gone toe to toe.
The inactivity of stewards and police are the major problem in stopping it happen.

If i heard anything i wouldnt report it. Quite a few people saying they are ashamed to say they dont report things, the way i see it im responsible for my own actions i dont shout shit like that and never would. If people want to then its not down to me to police them. Ill probably get hammered flr saying this but if everyone is honest most people are like this at football
