Worst place to live in Sunderland?

Not saying it’s the worst but I moved from hylton castle where I grew up into our lasses flat last year at Ashbrooke and I’ve got to say after living here for a bit Ashbrooke and surrounding areas, Hendon, up near the ivy, nearly all round backhouse Park, the esplanade, near the cricket ground etc there’s some lovely old houses but mostly all split into flats, half derelict, litter all over, abandoned cars, it seems to be a bit of a shit hole

Never really been to Ashbrooke before moving here other than it’s where I used to do all my driving lessons for some reason and my memories of it then (about 10-11 year ago) was that it was all canny nice, seemed to be nice cars parked all owa, nice old houses with nice gardens. Obviously there’s a lot of students in certain streets and always has been. But walking round it with the dog every day I’ve gotten to know the area and it seems to be in total decline. The litter and abandoned properties are the most striking thing. Sunderland high school is abandoned, that college building in backhouse Park is abandoned, the synagogue is derelict, every other house is empty overgrown gardens etc what’s going on?

None of that where I lived in hylton castle, was just working families and old people in my mam and dads street, absolutely no empty properties and no trouble ever. My car insurance went up about £200 when I moved here and when I looked on the police crime map there was sexual assaults, criminal damage, robbery, assaults, drunk and disorderly and all sorts all in the last month alone

Sounds like a normal Friday night out for @muggboots that mate. He's ok though so don't worry

I’d say Sunderland is quite unusual for a city in having no really bad areas. It’s a pretty safe place to live, you’re unlikely to be shot, stabbed, soaked in acid, be caught up in an armed robbery etc.

Outsiders who say Sunderland’s a shithole really haven’t a clue. It’s let down by having few attractions, but it’s by no means a bad place to live. We have plenty of arseholes, like any city, but not usually to the extent you hear about elsewhere.

Sad to read. In my youth they were some of the smartest areas in Sunderland.

Was a street in south wick years ago, think it's gone now.... Had a big wall at one end that looked over the roundabout on north hylton rd.. Our lass's mate used to live there and I always laughed as we turned in to pick her up ... Written on the wall was

All you ever used to hear about Pennywell was Plawsworth Square and the Eagle pub..both had a 'enter and you will die' stigma attached to them.

Knew plenty of people from the former and used to regularly gan in the latter. Never had any problems tbh. The Eagle went downhill when Whitbreads were forced to sell it off. Instead of a well respected landlord from outside it got a succession of ropey ones who were too close to the punters. The back room became a dope den and all the decent clientelle stopped going in.

Roker. Don't ever come here. You will be bummed to death by a Muslim.

Well if you're a young white female i'd be careful..been a spate of assaults an actual rape a young girl being forcefully dragged up the Avenue and schoolkids offered alcohol resulting in the school having to text the parents of ALL the kids to warn them of the dangers of certain people now living on/just off Roker Avenue..these are facts..stay safe folks.

It is sad like, the houses themselves are beautiful and theres still a few decent ones but there’s loads empty and you’re only ever a few yards away from a bedsit

Just doesn’t seem to be any money in the area anymore and there must have been loads at one time
