iirc there was an empty pen to the right which should have been opened up.
I don't believe so.

Who says there was 1000's of ticket less fans turning up at Hilsbrough? I WAS there and know first hand that it was the police/stadium control that caused the problem, not ticketless fans turning up on the chance of getting in - it was all ticket game.
I have photos (negatives were taken off me for the court case by the police) showing minute by minute what happened inside the stadium from 2.45 to 3.40 when i stopped taking pictures. It was NOT hooliganism of any sort.
when they did that doc/drama job there was. i presumed this would have been based on fact. maybe im wrong.
How would people from nottingham know there were 1000's from Liverpool without tickets?
I lived in Liverpool at the time and lived with the aftermath at at no point was there mentions of 1000's of ticketless fans causing the problem. Supporters turned up late as there were major problems on the motorway from the north west to yorkshire and those supporters travelling that route arrived late thus causing a backlog in that narrow street leading to the turnstiles, you have to remember that the lepping lane turnstiles also were the gates for the stand opposite the main stand (2nd largest stand at that time at Hilsbrough!)

Disaster waiting to happen. There were a few things that conspired that day and hooliganism wasn't one of them imo.
You can call it hooliganism, irresponsibilty, high spirits or whatever but the Liverpool fans weren't without any blame which is usually claimed.
I'm not saying we haven't behaved in a similar fashion, and actually said so, but to put all of the blame onto anyone but the Liverpool fans is slightly skewed in my opinion.

Been reading this post all the way through,it's a tricky one but at the end of the day this tragedy had nothing to do with hooligans/hooliganism at all, like an earlier poster said,if you were in the same position let's say next year FA Cup semi final, you've no ticket you're outside, suddenly the gates in front of you open, what would you do,be honest![]()

I know this is a very touchy subject so I'll choose my words very carefully. It was known for weeks that the game was a complete sell-out and there was no point in travelling to the ground without a ticket.
Despite this, 1000's of Liverpool fans went to Sheffield intent on doing what they often boasted about and 'jibbing' their way into the ground.
The Forest fans, on that day, had very few people there without tickets despite the fact that Hillsborough was less than an hour from Nottingham.
The Liverpool fans who forced their way into the Leepings Lane End knew that they would either be taking the seats of ticket holders or causing problems for the police and stewards who had nowhere to put them.
Because of the nature of the ground there was no need to have any empty sections as buffer zones. This meant that the 1000's of fans without tickets would never find seats and the game would be compromised.
This can be deemed as simply irresponsible.
However, you could argue that someone who travels to a sold out semi-final without a ticket intent on gaining entry, at the expense of decent fans, is displaying hooligan tendencies.
If you were to be excluded from the FA Cup semi-final, having purchased a ticket, because someone had stormed the ground and taken your seat, you may well call them a hooligan.
it was a fuck up from start to finish and it could easily have been us, nothing to do with hooliganism or Liverpool
the stadium's safety cert was 10 years out of date
the signage / crowd management was appalling
the map on the back of the tickets was wrong
the fuckwits who opened the gates and tried to blame fans for kicking it in
the gates in the front fence not being wide enough
and was anyone brought to task ? were they fuck
Ok move on from Hillsbrough what about storming the gates in Athens?
