Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

4 of the top 5 tracked planes on flight radar are all nato big birds doing circles over poland & Romania. even one keeping an eye on kaliningrad by the looks.
Noticed a couple of NATO but more USAF from small (DUKE..) to large (LAGR, REDEYE..). Even though I know little about what they're doing (other than some useful info @MonkeyLove provided) it's fascinating following them.

I'd expect to see some "headline" legislation when the dust settles, to do just that.

If the original legislation was passed in 2017, then it wasn't a "normal" parliament, a majority govt, or a particularly united Tory party. I genuinely don't remember the legislation re sanctions powers specifically - but wouldn't surprise me if a certain contingent of like-minded MPs such as Grieve, Soubry, Clarke, Woolaston etc voted with the opposition, as was in vogue for them at that time?

Anyway - it's moot now. The law says what it says and the law has to apply. This isn't Russia after all.
Actually looking at Hansard, the majority of parliament voted to pass the 2018 bill, with Maginsky amendments introduced by Labour to bring in coverage for human rights abuses.

Several divisions were held for amendents to widen the scope around oversaeas territories, and defeated by the Government

My solution would be a ceasefire. Give Vlad the corridor in the east for now. Get all other troops out of Ukraine and then bleed Russia dry until they oust him. Allow Oligarchs to stay out of jail if they give Eastern Ukraine back to Ukraine.

I really think the troops north of Kiev are at the Gates of Hell.

Edit. I doubt this will happen!

there's a decent write up of manpads here, which reckons they've already taken down russian aircraft (still in service like SU-25s) in both Syria and Eastern Ukraine.
seems to be flood of missiles of all types heading into Ukraine right now, this could be a game changer if they can get them up and around Kyiv quick smart.
like you say, helicopters would be well within reach and the russians love using them.

The stingers it seems are very good for Urban warfare. A bit like the anti tank stuff the West has sent.

They need to have visual on an enemy fighter but apparently very effective for being holed up in a tower block or city building for an ambush and stops enemy aircraft spending too long over cities as it gives time for forces with these Manpads to get setup, track them and get a lock on

Ie if it flies over Ukrainian troops in rural areas they wouldn’t have time to get it out and fire. If a fighter jet is circulating a city looking for targets then they are at risk of being hit

Some thoughts
Russia threatening nukes this is normally a sign you can't win the land war - see Nato - USSR 1960-1990 where we depended on nukes to deterre the Red Army as they'd be in Paris in days otherwise. Unless he is just itching to fire a non nuke hypersonic at a Carrier, that would be a game changer globally.
He is desperate to keep us out as a shock and awe NATO response could have us in Moscow by tea time - we don't need to take cities street to street as we aren't staying.
But none of this makes sense other than Russia is facing an existential crisis in the next twenty years as it is wedded to selling fossil fuels and it's customers are wedded to not using them.

It seems that now US intelligence is suggesting the 40 mile convoy was less of a strategic invasion force and a number of different Russian troop movements that were falling over each other due to issues.

There were gaps in the convoy that may have made it look like they were staggering to avoid attack. But maybe just different units bunching together

Nice use of piss bottles, looks like a HGV layby

Also, that thing is fully loaded - if they tow that off somewhere and decide to use it, it'll flatten something pretty comprehensivly
waiting on him running on at the end in a russian uniform

Has Putin been saying much over the last few days? I know his mouthpiece Lavrov has kept going but Putesy seems a bit quiet?

This is interesting from an expert - how the mud season and poor maintenance is affecting the Russian advance

i posted a link to that earlier as it really made me sit up. the reason being when i served we had our vehicles (tanks) inspected and all its gear inspected every few months (quarterly or something like that).
(can't remember the exact details but it was along the lines of) if there was something found wrong with your wagon or you had gear missing you were given one 'point' (and you pay was docked to replace whatever that was - tools etc), if you got more than 3 points for an inspection you got extra duties, if you got 5 or more points you were put on a charge and had to go in front of the Squadron Leader.
The point being our wagons and equipment had to be in good order so we were ready to deploy at any time.

The Russians can't even be fucked to make sure their tires are OK, on wagons that are worth a small fortune.

USAF and RAF Boeing Rivet Joint surveillance aircraft have been up almost every day since this started and a couple of days prior. The USAF have been sending their Boeing E8-C up intermittently too, which is a surveillance / command aircraft. Other bits and pieces have shown up now and again, V22 Ospey, a few Blackhawks, an F15 over Romania etc.

Not sure what the stratotankers / other air-to-air refuelling craft are doing, either refuelling fighters which aren't showing on the map or refuelling the sig-int / surveillance aircraft.

There's an RAF Rivet Joint coming in now (RRR7221) which may take over from the USAF one already up.

Also noticed if you watch it in the late evening / early morning you can watch the Globemasters, A400Ms and other transporters flying into Estonia, Poland etc
