Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

Yes, it seems a mixture of USAF, NATO, RAF and the odd other air force like Poland, Greece, Turkey, etc. I must admit, I know very little about war tactics so I was wondering what the point of these flights were other than having planes close to the action.

Just had a look it seems to be lots of different planes to do lots of different things. Mobile command and control (Usually to direct operations but as US aren’t doing that I presume they are to advise Ukraine’s leaders), intelligence gathering and enemy movements, communication interception and jamming. And some more specialist ones like “nuke sniffers” which apparently the West developed to track Russian subs.

Assuming they are supporting Ukraine behind the scenes then they could be invaluable if Russia take out Ukraine’s own capabilities

There's a leading question, letting some bias show there ;)

At the risk of getting into politics rather than the thread subject the government have a decent majority, they could easily introduce legislation that would moot any court challenge. That they choose not to, and wring their hands about legal challenges, tells you they aren't as commited as they claim to be.
David Allen Green covered this very point early this week.
It is kind of worse than that our government has a habit of breaking the law and saying so sue me when it wants to do something. Windrush etc did sue and win. The gov just ignores the court if it feels like it.
So what is different about the Russian Crooks?

IKEA closing its 17 shops in Russia and not buying any material from Russia or Belarus.

Class. I’m not usually a fan of “cancel culture” but I’m loving this.

There are times when it is undeniably a ‘force for good’.

They probably won’t do for a long time. Ukraine had 200 of the latest stinger missiles delivered yesterday that can take down a fighter jet in the right circumstances.

And today Germany is dumping its old stock of 2,700 Manpads to them. Apparently these are ancient so will be useless against modern fighter jets. But will be good for Russian helicopters and potentially Russian cargo planes depending on what height they are flying at (They have a ceiling)

But the pure fact they have 2,700 which is a huge number means they can afford to be a bit more speculative in firing them even when against the odds

there's a decent write up of manpads here, which reckons they've already taken down russian aircraft (still in service like SU-25s) in both Syria and Eastern Ukraine.
seems to be flood of missiles of all types heading into Ukraine right now, this could be a game changer if they can get them up and around Kyiv quick smart.
like you say, helicopters would be well within reach and the russians love using them.

Did it with Firefighters pensions too.

Cost the taxpayer hundreds of thousands to eventually lose to the FBU in the Supreme Court.

Seems more than usual circling about today. Even the Belgian Air Force are there although haven't seen any RAF today. Cheers for the info.
