Roy Keane

As a club I reckon we are in a position of being out with an ex who couldn't live with but now thing maybe you can't live without.

We're 6 pints in and on the way to the ablutions, your eye is on the exit door, but your mind is on the Johnny machine.
That's basically the analogy of being a Sunderland supporter.

I didn’t say he hadn’t. If we hired someone that hadn’t managed for 13 year that wasn’t called Roy Keane yad Gan crackers.
And I’d argue that knowing what social media is and being able to use a mobile phone aren’t necessarily assets when it comes to managing a football team. If he did get the job and took us up I’d be owwer the moon, it’s just at this moment in time I don’t think he can.

I'm struggling to understand why you think man-management and motivation are so different now to what they were then.

Who would be your choice out of interest! For me, Keane ticks more boxes than any other realistic option

See, I don't really know. I acknowledge that any appointment in League One is likely to be underwhelming to some degree.

From the candidates mentioned, I like the sound of Edwards and Kisnorbo. Now, I don't know that much about them tbh, they probably have plenty of flaws too and obviously I'm a lot more familiar with Keane. I just like the idea of a young up-and-coming coach who has succeeded with the resources they've had available while playing a style of football that is likely to work with the squad that we have.

I see this sort of post a lot. Of course it‘s correct, but has the game of football changed that much that it’s an issue?

What exactly do people think has changed so much that somebody who played at the very highest level, and is still heavily involved in watching? Is it really a barrier to coaching for somebody like Keane. Is it not still a pretty simple game at it’s core?
I think it has changed absolutely massively in terms of data, science, social media, and player welfare. If he was exactly how he was last time he was here he is doomed to fail imo. But it's not like he has been out of football completely. He's working for Sky up close and personal with the very top managers in the game. If he's been clever he'll of been taking notes from how the likes of Pep and Klopp do it and see how he can translate their ways of working into his own styles. He's also been assistant managers elsewhere and as someone said he's been away and trained with the likes of the All Blacks to learn stuff.

What a cabbage, the guy is right, I can't understand why many on here exercise their hands on wanting Keane back, he was about to take us down, did bollox at Ipswich and there's a reason nobody has took a punt on him except as an assistant since, yes he got us up by some fluke and he talks a great game as did LJ but talk doesn't get us promoted. If he's appointed I will get behind him and the team, but I really believe folk here will be calling for his head by end of season or early next should we get promoted.
‘Got us up by some fluke’ - all credibility went out of the window at the end of that waffle. 🤷‍♂️

What's the actual state of play? Keane & McCann are both confirmed as having interviews?

I don't want to rain on people's parade; I know Keane would be a very popular appointment and football is an emotional sport. But we'd be hoping that he drags us up through sheer force of personality rather than any particular tactical nous. It's been a long time since he managed... I just don't know if he fits the bill of the type of manager we'd be looking for.

I do like him, I just don't know if he's the man for the job right now. Would that feelgood character be enough to carry us through?
Are many managers in league one tactical geniuses?

Keane kept a side in the PL. Not sure he's such a fool people make out

Why wouldn’t he have the tactical nouse? He played under two of the greatest managers on world football, and certainly had sufficient tactical nouse to take us to promotion and keep us up.

Far too much talk of “formations” and “systems” and “philosophies” now anyway. Good teams have good players, playing with confidence and all understanding their jobs. People have tried to recast football as rocket science on the back of the Barcelona/tika-taka era, but it’s really not.
Posters questioning Keanes tactical nouse mustn't have watched much league one football.

The passion and momentum a Roy Keane return to the SoL would generate is enough to get us promoted from League One and even The Championship, I don't doubt that for one second. It's just whether he himself can cope with the constraints of the Head Coach role and if he is happy to be restricted to a strict recruitment model?

My heart says yep, right now, immediately, bring him home, where is he now and I'll pick him up and drive him to his interview! But my head is not so sure...

However, f**k it! Give me true passion and desire in the Red 'n' White, with a bloke who actually understands the club and the North East at the helm of SAFC over spreadsheets and Wyscout!

Na na na nananana, nannana, Keano!!

We used to laugh at the mags over their Keegan and Shearer obsession. We are going the same over Keane and Defoe. We just lost 6-0 and it’s seems forgotten over a couple of big names.

I like Defoe but can’t stand Keane. Some of the things he’s said and done over the years are appalling. We will become Ireland reserves again and that won’t get us where we want to be.
I agree. Too big a risk
