Roy Keane

It's been a long time since he managed...

I see this sort of post a lot. Of course it‘s correct, but has the game of football changed that much that it’s an issue?

What exactly do people think has changed so much that somebody who played at the very highest level, and is still heavily involved in watching, can’t cope with? Is it really a barrier to coaching for somebody like Keane? Is it not still a pretty simple game at it’s core?

Why wouldn’t he have the tactical nouse? He played under two of the greatest managers on world football, and certainly had sufficient tactical noise to take us to promotion and keep us up.

Far too much talk of “formations” and “systems” and “philosophies” now anyway. Good teams have good players, playing with confidence and all understanding their jobs. People have tried to recast football as rocket science on the back of the Barcelona/tika-taka era, but it’s really not.

You’re going to have to be careful here because I’m agreeing with most of your posts. Dangerous times

Part of his downfall the first time was actually bringing in players to move us forward when given money!

Take that away and he can focus solely on what he’s good at, but have an influence and say in incomings / outgoings
Everyone on about D O F the transfer window is closed all the players are in all Roy has to do is concentrate on the league

Keane was some force when he was younger. Passionate, driven, capable of inspiring, a maverick and a leader and as hard as nails.
My fear is that in the intervening period he has become a bit of a caricature of what he once was.
Powers fade as we age.
And if he gets the job I'll cheer like the rest.

What was the point then? It’s not like Keane doesn’t know what social media or mobile phones are, and it’s not like he hasn’t been in football when those things were around.
I didn’t say he hadn’t. If we hired someone that hadn’t managed for 13 year that wasn’t called Roy Keane yad Gan crackers.
And I’d argue that knowing what social media is and being able to use a mobile phone aren’t necessarily assets when it comes to managing a football team. If he did get the job and took us up I’d be owwer the moon, it’s just at this moment in time I don’t think he can.

It’s happening, I believe 😎

We’ve been in the doldrums for too long, had to endure Simon “flipchart” Grayson, Chris “I’ve got 10 kids” Coleman, Jack “1-1” Ross, Phil “no flair” Parky & Lee “ice in the head, fire in the belly” Johnson!

Time for a proper leader of men, take no shite, play to the death, box office Keano to return!!
I like Cola. And i like Mentos. But not at the same time.

Do we really want to have that schism between two fans’ favourites?

That may be enough. We have a very talented squad who when they score early absolutely batter teams but dont seem to have the mental nous yet to recover if we go behind. Someone who can inspire, couple with the professionalism of Defoe may be exactly what is needed short term

That's fair enough; if we believe we have the best squad in the division, it might be enough (I think that was the case in 06/07).

My concern is that it might be short-term thinking. And I know we have to get out of this division immediately, don't get me wrong. But should we not be looking to get a manager who can do that and also be expected to bring us on further in the Championship?

I know it's not easy, because a lot of managers are spoofers, and I'm all for Keane getting an interview. I just don't think we should limit ourselves in the interview process and pick the best candidate, regardless of their profile.
