Prostate Cancer

Had a similar situation myself a few year back, I kept telling them the high PSA was due to a virus but they wouldn't let it drop and pushed in the end for me to have a biopsy. It was like having your knackers stapled to the table a dozen times. When the results came back the Consultant said it was all clear and couldn't understand why they'd bothered pushing me down the biopsy route.
I have had a couple of biopsies in the past, but because I am low risk, they just send me for a MRI scan now. The biopsy was a very strange affair, more uncomfortable than painful. My backside was on the edge of the table and while a very nice nurse was chatting to me, the technician was busy probing up my backside.

So you enjoyed it then ;)

A year today since I had a radical prostatectomy at Sunderland Royal. On 3 monthly blood tests now because the biopsy on the removed prostate indicated cancer cells on the margins....ie. it had broken out of the prostate.
I had no sign of a problem but simply asked my GP for a routine psa test at a well-man clinic, and bingo the psa level was 13!
My biggest problem now is being able to find travel insurance.

I have difficulty finding travel insurance as well. Have you tried the section in money-supermarket for pre existing conditions? I can usually find something there.

I was diagnosed a couple of years ago. Never had any symptoms other than getting up the night to pee so I was lucky it was caught early following a visit to my GP about something else entirely. Early test results weren't massively
concerning but the fact my Dad had had it meant they kept going the extra mile "just to make sure..."

As for treatment, the scans and biopsies suggested the cancer hadn't spread beyond the prostate so the advice was to have it removed. All done robotically: four tiny incisions for scissors and cameras to go in and one bigger one just above my belly button where they pulled the offending article out. Went in on the Wednesday, stayed overnight and discharged the following lunchtime.

While the surgery itself was no problem, I found some of the post-op palaver quite unpleasant - if I ever have to chose between death and a catheter in future it'll be a no-brainer - but that's only for a week or so.

All the tests since have given the all-clear and any after effects I have are, in the grand scheme of things, fairly minor, so I do feel lucky.

Good luck with your operation, mate, and I fully endorse your advice to get checked out, especially if your Dad had it.
Our lasses uncle had his removed a year or so back.hewad grade 7 so they had to operate. Call me niave but I had no idea you can't get the wood on after surgery. I know he's struggling in some aspects to come to terms with it.

Good luck mate. Cancer is weighing heavy on my family right now, it’s a **** of a disease and I hope you are ok.

I have a few of the symptoms but went to see a doctor a few months back after putting it off for a while. She said it didn’t feel enlarged so hopefully I was worrying about nowt, but I’m not so sure she’s right. Feels a bit like I can’t go back for a second opinion or it just looks like I like doctors fingers up me hoop.

My problem in finding travel insurance is compounded not only because of the prostate cancer but because of age and 3 coronary artery artery bypass grafts. I still manage, but at a cost and avoid USA etc.

I wouldnt worry about getting a second opinion mate. I've been to see two specialists - one at Shields and one at the Freeman about mine. I didnt like the one at Shields.
I'm up for a piss about 3 times a night and was concerned about having an enlarged prostate.
I have all kinds off test included camera down my jappa.
Just seen the specialist at the Freeman last week and he is still saying that it isnt enlarged it is just a stricture in the tube.
I still dont believe them though.

We've just found out that my Dad isn't responding well to the drugs he's on (Degeralex and can't remember the name of the white tablet)..next step will be a steroid and then that's it...awful.

I used to be up at least 3 times a night for a pee as well but after taking Pumpkin Seed Oil tablets I'm hardly up at all

I had OHS in December last year (replacement aortic valve and 2 x CABG) and thought I would be struggling for travel insurance. I found that going for single journey insurance was better than looking for annual cover. I went to visit relatives in Gambia at the start of March (about 3 months post op) and got cover with these people...

AllClear Travel - Compare Medical Travel Insurance UK | Official Website

I obviously answered all their questions and declared all my operations, conditions and meds and the price was just under £40 for 8 days. Worth a try at least...
