Prostate Cancer

Hope that everything goes well for you, Mr. Wartbug. I was diagnosed with it about 5yrs ago but I am classified as low risk, so they just keep an eye on me. I see my specialist every December for the “Festive Finger” and have a couple of blood tests a year and a MRI scan every couple of years. My two main problems is that caffeine and alcohol irritate the prostate and I’m always in the loo if I have those. The worse one is that ordinary travel insurance won’t touch me and I use specialist sites which are more expensive. Apart from these, life is just normal.

I'm scheduled for surgery for this shortly and have been amazed at how many people have had it. Most people I've talked to know someone who has had it. Worryingly, most are also unaware of the symptoms.

Apparently, it's been bubbling away for years and I haven't connected the dots, just believing the symptoms were part of getting on a bit or straining something when lifting etc. Please Gentlemen (and Ladies - you all have men in your life) take two minutes to have a look at the symptoms on these sites (Disclaimer: this isn't a recommendation and other sites are available etc...;));

Prostate Cancer - Symptoms and Signs

The earlier you identify the bugger the easier the treatment!

Good luck, hope everything goes ok and well done posting the symptoms and warning signs, as timing is crucial you never know might help somebody else!

I was diagnosed a couple of years ago. Never had any symptoms other than getting up the night to pee so I was lucky it was caught early following a visit to my GP about something else entirely. Early test results weren't massively
concerning but the fact my Dad had had it meant they kept going the extra mile "just to make sure..."

As for treatment, the scans and biopsies suggested the cancer hadn't spread beyond the prostate so the advice was to have it removed. All done robotically: four tiny incisions for scissors and cameras to go in and one bigger one just above my belly button where they pulled the offending article out. Went in on the Wednesday, stayed overnight and discharged the following lunchtime.

While the surgery itself was no problem, I found some of the post-op palaver quite unpleasant - if I ever have to chose between death and a catheter in future it'll be a no-brainer - but that's only for a week or so.

All the tests since have given the all-clear and any after effects I have are, in the grand scheme of things, fairly minor, so I do feel lucky.

Good luck with your operation, mate, and I fully endorse your advice to get checked out, especially if your Dad had it.

Cheers for the good wishes everyone, it really is appreciated.

Oh man, gutted to hear about your dad. I was lucky in that respect, but hearing that has hit home. Hopefully he'll be around for some time yet.

You're doing a great thing by telling people. I bet you've noticed some concerned looks on peoples faces as they recognize some things that could warrant checking.

Ta mate..aye it came as a big shock with me Dad as like you say there's not really many obvious warning signs..he's 82 and we're doing our best for him..thing is with me Dad is he's always eaten pretty healthy..not a big drinker..his hormone level was over 200 and a healthy one is round the 30 mark..he's responding well to the drugs they've given him though..fingers crossed.

Best of luck that all goes well.
I wish you a full and speedy recovery.

Good luck....at 47 got tested as PSA was very high, turned out to be prostatitis.

But agree, don’t be embarrassed and keep eye on waterworks etc.

Anyhoo good luck Max and any queries PM me.

I was literally climbing the walls when my Doctor did the finger test with me..no warning two fingers..giddup..:eek:

All the best with your treatment @max wartbug. I was concerned that I may be affected last years and had the blood test which didn't show any adverse results. I know many people who have been affected by Prostate Cancer and many of the symptoms described by Bill Turnbull (ex BBC Breakfast) following his diagnosis were familiar to me. If you're in any doubt contact your GP as it is a cancer which is generally very treatable.

Had a similar situation myself a few year back, I kept telling them the high PSA was due to a virus but they wouldn't let it drop and pushed in the end for me to have a biopsy. It was like having your knackers stapled to the table a dozen times. When the results came back the Consultant said it was all clear and couldn't understand why they'd bothered pushing me down the biopsy route.

Good luck mate

Knarr a lad who just started treatment for it. He's a Pompey fan and I saw him at Marylebone after the Checkatrade. He was full of commiserations for me after the shit result for us. I said losing a game of footy is fuck all mate compared to the fight you've got ahead, best of luck with that.

Good luck with the Op Max, one of my brothers had it a couple of year ago and came though fine and is now fighting fit.
