Places you felt most on edge in your life

I was pissed up in Liverpool wandering back to the hotel with a kebab. Some lads were sitting on the wall outside of about the only house in the street which weren’t boarded up. They offered me a can and a smoke, we shared my kebab and they told me the way to go. Described it to my scouse mate a few days later and he reckoned I’d been very lucky. It was proper Simon Reeve stuff.

First night in Bangkok about a decade or so ago. Was with some mates round the gogo bars but was canny drunk n somehow ended up in this nightclub on me own. Got cracking onto this lass n wasnt sure if she was a prozzy or what but she said she’d come back to my hotel. We got in a taxi n she started talking to the driver in Thai. Instead of going to my hotel we were heading down all these back alleys before stopping at this apartment block with like an underground car park. There was a gang of local lads stood at the end n I was absolutely bricking it. Had no phone or any idea where I was. Argued with the taxi driver but for whatever reason he wouldn’t take me to my hotel. The lass had to pretty much drag me out the car n past the gang of lads. There was another gang on the landing we had to go past and I was convinced she was in cahoots with them n it was the end for me. Remember thinking I’ll just end up as a missing person cos me mates won’t have a clue where id gone.

Anyway got into her apartment n everything was fine. She never had a tail either!! 😂 Probably the most scared I’d been in me life like.

Had that in LA In 85, few of us wearing too much red. Bar manager rang the cops to escort us back to hotel. Naples, coming out of Olympic Stadium in Rome, Port Glasgow, Port Authority Bus Station in mid 80s, felt nowt. ;) Manor and Finsbury Park! Really?
Mind the most edged I’ve ever felt was in a Cheltenham night club! Seriously.

Heading down Las Ramblas about two thirds down on RH side a few blocks in used to be a bit dodgy 20 yrs back. Weird thing is across las ramblas and a block in is just about my favourite restaurant in the world.
The area is called El Raval. It was always the dodgy area even in medieval times. It was the area beyond the city walls and is notorious for drugs, prostitution and petty crime.

I did a week long field trip there studying the city planning and development

Think I wandered through there the only time I went to Barcelona. Only area I remember breing a bit ropey was around Sants station.

Budapest for me. On a stag do and got into a few scary moments. 1st lad nearly got mugged going into McDonald’s. Lucky all the lads turned up in time to frighten the mugger away. Same day we got attacked while on a beer bike. The night was then just being on edge. Didn’t like it one bit.

Actually, now you come to mention it, Port Glasgow, along with Greenock and Paisley are not for the faint hearted - and the bit of Boro known as Over The Border

Aye, been there and it was a touch fraught. Nowt though compared to my earlier examples or The Slipway in the 80s.

Workwise, Clayton near Manchester was a bit dodgy and so was Dalston Junction, but never felt uneasy in Glasgow.

Holiday wise, I thought San Diego was worse than San Fransisco, but there are dodgy areas of any city over there. Wandered into rough parts of Buffalo, Phoenix, Tampa, Miami and Orlando that seemed as bad as anywhere.

I can't think of anywhere in Europe I've felt really uncomfortable.

Greenock was a bit rough when I worked there. A junkie tried to sell me an electric drill. But it didn't seem that intimidating. I was only there on a nightshift though so didn't see much of it.
