Pickford critics

This was the valencia goal that Neville absolutely slaughtered Pickford for saying it would have been bread and butter for De Gea etc. He said this because it wasn't right in the top corner but it was the sheer power that made it just about unstoppable IMO. make your mind up.

For me, the key points in this debate are: -
1. Quiet weekend on the footy front so media have to create their own 'story' to fill air time. A keeper made a mistake! (so did most other players this weekend at some point in their games)
2. Where keepers are concerned, I tend to listen to the opinion of other keepers - in the same way as I tend to listen more when defenders / midfielders / strikers who played at a high level comment on their own positions. It's a specialised position, unlike any other on the pitch.
3. Chris Sutton, FFS! Do me a favour....
4. Pickford will come away from any unreasonable criticism even stronger.

He’s on poor form so the criticism is justified, the alternative keepers’ form is grossly exaggerated though, the like if Pope are barely any better. Henderson has maybe been the best English goalkeeper but Pickford offers England a way a of playing out from the back the others don’t.

I think his distribution is a big part of why Southgate likes him

He's (at the very least been) better than Pickford mind.

It's all about opinions but the way the game is going, especially in the Premier League you'll be hard pressed to find a better keeper outside of the top three or four clubs who have a keeper with better distribution with the ball at their feet than Pickford. I know he's the blue-eyed boy on here because of his Sunderland connections but trying to look at it objectively, apart from Ederson who's better on the floor? Genuine question by the way, I respect anyone others opinions

agree with you massively on point two. There was a Buffon interview where he pointed out how ridiculous non keepers can get when commenting on the position:

Not because he’s one of our own but I honestly think he’s an outstanding keeper, everything a modern keeper should be. A tremendous shot stopper, gets in great positions and always bawls at the shitty defence in front of him. He makes the odd mistake but of course it’s amplified by his being a keeper. I think working with Ancelotti will make him even better. Proud to have had him play for us, it’s been many years since we’ve produced two players like him and Henderson together.

In terms of save percentage Pickford is ranked 19th out of premier league goalkeepers this season.
He's saved just 62% of shots faced this season.
That's 2nd worst out of English goalkeepers.

it all depends on where the shots are from though and how easy the chances are. If a side is sat deep, teams end up shooting from further out giving the keeper a much easier chance of making a save. We did that and mannone was at the top for this stat and people thought he was better than de gea because of it
