Nah, for me it's a football greed thing and not just the mags reaping what they sow. We had sellouts in the few good seasons and the ground was extended but it's not been constantly sold out ever since. The positive of that is it can allow for crowd size fluctuation. If we stayed on 42,000 and didn't extend but stayed mid table having a brief sniff of European places then it's a given prices would have crept up until demand was enough to still get sellouts. We agree on most things but not this - you reap what you sow.
We did extend which was great for fans but we didn't stay up there long and demand went down. Our ticket prices have been some of the cheapest in the Premier League but that's due to lack of sellouts. If we'd been up there selling out then there's no doubt our tickets would possibly price out many fans on lower budgets.
In our last PL season, we averaged 41k and made £9 million gate receipts so averaged £220 per fan. In the 2015 books, Southampton made £18m and averaged £580 per fan and that's 2 seasons prior. I didn't look at their 2017 numbers as they got £22m but that was helped by Europe also. Our 2015 numbers were just over £10m and about £240 per fan, so Southampton's £580 per fan is nearly 2.5 times our amount.
We both have a decent hard core set of fans up here that will go no matter what and we both have huge fan bases. We've have both had little success in the last 50 years but any sniff of owt like they had in the 90's or we briefly had those 2 seasons then we show the true potential numbers.
