New Music Releases Thread

I hadn't realised until this morning who BNQT are. It's been my first listen of the day but only a handful of tracks in.

Ryan Adams released Prisoner B-Sides today! Just found out from his social media accounts. Will hopefully give it a spin tomorrow!

Initial reaction is that BNQT is a pile of crap
I've had 2 listens and think it's ok. Just ok. I like the 60s feel to the first couple of tracks, but it's a bit "indie by numbers" in places.

Hit the north was class like

Ulrika Spacek loud as fuck and didn't move all through the set looked moody as fuck

Fast forward to honeyblood set and two lads out the band are bouncing all over and on the stage with them

Now we've had a chance to digest the releases for the first 3 months of the year, what are everyone's favourite albums so far?

Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness is my favourite of the year so far. The perfect pop album IMO. I also love Son Volt, Aimee Mann, Body Count and Ryan Adams.

As far as Friday's releases go, I've given The New Pornographers, Happyness and The Smith Street Band a good listen. All are good, TNP are the pick of the bunch by a long way. The production on a couple of the Smith Street tracks lets it down and I've never been a big fan of Wil Wagner's voice but it's very good otherwise. I'm not as enamoured with Happyness as James is but I have enjoyed it - only 3 listens so far though.

I had not heard of The Smith Street Band till I read a review in a music magazine the other day. They gave their new album five out of five and I was intrigued by the review so Spotified the album and gave it a good listen last night. Couple of the songs were a bit loud to me but overall I rather enjoyed the album. Song For You is a very good song, probably one of the best I have heard this year. Its break mid-song and followed one minute slow build-up even made me smile. Will listen again. They reminded me a little of The Golden Virgins.

Descendants have followed up the album of their career with an absolutely horrendous charity single. I like the sentiment behind it, but lyrically and musically it's very basic, even for a 3-chord punk rock band!

Really enjoying the Ryan Adams "B-Sides", but no surprises there!

The WALL record is also very enjoyable

They've split since recording it seemingly. New stuff I've listened to:

The Vacant Lots: I think this came out last week. They're clearly influenced by Suicide (the late Alan Vega recorded guest vocals). Enjoyable!
Lisa Knapp: Folktronica, I guess. A well timed album about May Day. Intriguing and beguiling. A little bit like Coco Rosie.
Sylvan Esso: two folkie types going electro-pop. The first album was okay, this is really good.
Mark Mulcahy: an extremely under-rated songwriter. He's gone from primarily using guitars to including synths.
John Mellencamp: you basically know what you're getting. Blue collar country rock done well.
BNQT: S'alright, I guess. I always found Midlake a bit conservative aside from The Trials of Van Occupanther.
