New Music Releases Thread

At FG
Black Angels' newie is good. Essentially, slightly sludgy psychrock.
I've only given this one listen but I like it a lot so far - I can hear a bit of Tool and some stoner rock in there too.

I'm unsure on Ron Sexsmith - again just the one listen so I'll persevere.

Are we meant to be pronouncing BNQT as the initials or Banquet?

Done fuck all for the past ten days so had a bit of a catch up.

Kendrick - Great. Don't think anything will beat it this year. Probably a touch weaker than TPAB because of a few weak tracks. Element is absolutely superb.
Sorority Noise - Enjoyable for what it is, nice Gaslight Anthem reference.
Joe Goddard - decent enough. You'll like it if you like Hot Chip amazingly enough. Bit of a slog in places and could have done without three or four of the tracks.
SiR - Follow up EP to his debut last year was very nice, only 20 minutes long but probably one of my favourites of the year so far. Wouldn't be surprised if he ended up quite a big name in the next few years given the label he's signed to. First song on there with Anderson .Paak is a gem.
Julie Byrne - Never heard of her before but gave it a go based on the reviews. Really fun, one for Laura Marling fans. Enjoyed it more than Semper Femina.
New Pornographers - Never listened to any of their stuff before, really impressed by that album. Definitely gonna have a listen to a few of their albums on the back of this.
Spoon - One of my favourites of the year so far. Again I've never really listened to them and will have a go of a few of their previous albums based on this one.
Arca - Seemed like a bit of a change from his other stuff to me but I really like it. Desafio in particular is a great song.
Jesus and Mary Chain - A bit meh. I think I'm missing whatever it is that's meant to make them as good as what their reputation seems to be, always been a bit underwhelmed.
Passion Pit - Like it more than when I first heard it, half the songs sound like they aren't finished though.
Priests - Cringe when someone says they dont 'get' a band, but I just don't get them. Bands like them and Diet Cig that get described as punk or post punk but very little seems interesting about them to me. I don't understand if I'm meant to laugh when they mention things like Burger King or Wheel of Fortune.
Tim Darcy - Disappointed. Supporting Angel Olsen in a few months in Leeds so will give it a few more listens before I see him. Would have been great if it was Ought supporting her.
Ryan Adams - Something likable about, something excruciatingly boring about it.
Hippo Campus - Just an American Little Comets really aren't they? Nothing new.
Raekwon - As expected. He's a good rapper, it's a good album.
Freddie Gibbs - A bit rough but I love it. First song is one of my favourites of 2017. 'I be kickin shit like Solange in the elevator' never fails to make me laugh.
Lil Uzi Vert - He's awful, one of the worst rappers about but 'XO Tour Llife' just came from nowhere, a genuinely really really good song. Hate that I don't hate this EP.
Tory Lanez - It's alright, sounds repetitive. I don't mind him but the fact he's sub headlining the NME stage at Reading/Leeds is incredible. Remember my first year when The Streets, Crystal Castles and someone else were in that slot.
Playboi Carti - Saved the best for last. Genuinely one of the worst albums/mixtapes I've heard in years, f***ing awful. Noticed it got a 7.3 on pitchfork and one of the songs was a 'best new track' so...

Still got a huge list of about 50 albums already released this year that I haven't got round to listening to yet. Don't worry I'll do another brief review of them at some point if I can be arsed because I'm sure you've all been enthralled by this post.

It's pronounced Banquet supposedly.

Spoon are great and the newest isn't anywhere near their best one. Plenty to dig into

I reckon the spoon album is absolutely brilliant like

Sorority Noise - Enjoyable for what it is, nice Gaslight Anthem reference.
reckon it's a grower. First couple of listens i didnt like it anywhere near as much as their other stuff, however i put it on again today in the bath with a can and thought it was cracking. Wish he could find something else to sing about other than his marras carking it every song like.

:oops::lol:

Agreed completely. Mostly the early two or three tracks I could do without. It's enjoyable but nowhere near as good as either of The 2 Bears' albums or most Hot Chip albums.

Robyn Hitchcock is on top form on his self titled newie. His usual mix of psychedelia, post punk and power pop.
Woods' album is more of a mini album, I guess. They're still exploring the Ethiopian sounds of City Sun Eater. Well worth a listen!

Thought I recognised the name, I loved their album "Indigo Meadow" from a few years back. I'd forgot about them so will give this new one a listen.

My favourite is still their debut, "Passover" but all five albums plus a couple of EPs are well worth a listen.

I'm making a video tomorrow for the release of Mura Masa's album, bit random and typical it's someone I have no interest in  lots of collaborations on there though

Had to google Mura Masa. Seems to get described as a mournful Hudson Mohawke a lot (well, by The Guardian) and also seems to be heavily influenced by HudMo. Firmly in my one to watch camp.

All my planning, all my footage...and this is what Universal records used

The Desperate Journalist album has really grown on me. It's a bit indie by numbers and I'm sure it's totally forgettable by the end of the year but it's a really good listen

Just booked tickets for Wire next Thursday, supported by Ulrika Spacek (again!) and Venn. Not bad for £19

New releases for April 28th include: Kasabian, Gorillaz, Feist, Willie Nelson, BNQT, Mark Lanegan Band, John Mellencamp, Bill Baird (x2), Mew, Mary J Blige, Thurston Moore, Juliana Hatfield, Colin Stetson and Sylvan Esso. I will have missed something.

Life of Agony.

Also New Found Glory for any 15 year olds reading the thread! I remember when they first came out, my mates at school were crazy about them (we'd all got into Green Day, Blink 182 etc at the same time), but I'd progressed to Bad Religion and Pennywise by then and thought they were horrendous! I can't believe they are still going!

There are a few take my fancy. Think I'll go with LoA, Feist and Thurston. Gorillaz as back up.
