Kia will have conditions attached to the warranty, i.e. annual service and MOT by one of their dealerships, which will be costly

Not at all. It's a perceived lack of quality by the buying public. VW had to overcome it to a lesser extent with Skoda. It's a crowded market and cars cost a f***ing fortune, people need to be reassured/bribed into buying a lesser known marque.
