Colback or Henderson

If the ball is moving in the direction you want it too, you don't need to slow play down by taking a touch. You move with the ball. That's how many good players are said to ghost past the opposition. He is much more like Xavi in his style of play. I'm not comparing them ability wise.
First time I saw De Bruyne play live that is exactly what made him stand out. I find it hard to explain how but he definitely controlled the ball without touching it - at the time I found it amazing.

Tbf, I remember Bruce saying in like 2011 that Henderson was worth an extra 10 million because of his attitude at the time- didn't drink, looked after himself, first in last out of training.

Makes a big difference, if you remember Carrol was a contemporary or Wilshire.

Colback didn't necesarrily lack the quality, he had an attitude problem, chasing the money, partying with the rotten core iirc. When you are at the top level, it makes a huge difference.

When Henderson left it was done in a few hours, he probably wouldn't have complained if we had turned Liverpool down. He's always just got on with it.
He had to be pushed out of the door.

Schwarz stood out as the only player we had at the time who did it. Bracewell used to anarl.

Yes exactly. An extra yard gained instantly. Watch Neil closely, he does it even when under pressure to wiggle out of potentially dangerous situations in his own half.

Yes, they both did too. Bracewell when the ball was moving sideways :) but he still did it. Buying space.

Love Dan Neil. Got all the attributes to go to the top - just hope some of the way is with us.

Shudder to think where he might be if we still had Parky - probably at Harrogate with Diamond.

This aged well  At the time I was watching a lot of these two and found Jack to have the edge with being consistent in his performances. Even when Jordan went to Liverpool I thought at the time we've done very well with the money we got.....is he really worth that much?

Turns out oh yes, he's matured into a excellent footballer and has given Liverpool superb value for money.
Jack still playing at NF by all accounts good luck to him.

Tough one this, I mean, one of them went on to become Captain of the team, win the premier league, champions league, captain the national team, lead them to the semis of a world cup and was then part of the team that was runners up at the euros.
The other one was Jack Colback who got left out of arguably the worst Newcastle squad in 20 years.

Not just saying this with the benefit of hindsight but never really got the hype around Colback at all. Looked an ordinary if solid enough player on the initial run under O'Neill but never really looked like he was capable of kicking onto another level the way Henderson did in his best performances in a Sunderland shirt.

Colback never really stood out as anything that much better than many other home grown midfielders we've had down the years, such as Paul Lemon, Martin Gray, Brian Atkinson, Paul Thirlwell etc. Henderson was a cut above, but was never really that bowled over by him when he was here. The only local midfielder who i've been fully impressed with who had the lot in the last 45 years was Gary Rowell. Full England cap certainty until that injury.

Having searched your posting history, I can confirm you did always think this

Actually thought Colback would kick on and become a decent Prem midfielder. What happened serves him right the greedy get. Club handled it all badly though letting him run contract down.
How was he greedy. He left to join the club he supported as a kid. Don't get this every player who dares to leave us are greedy and chasing money.

He stitched the club up somewhat (having been coached and developed from being a small bairn) by running down his contract and joining our nearest rivals who were also competing at a similar level to us at that point. Whether it was greed or not, it was a bit of a shit move. Club has to take a bit of responsibility too.
