ALS Methven Interview

Bloomin' great read.

Liked this bit...

We thought we’d take over a different kind of League One club; a club with potential that maybe could go places. Not a club as big as Sunderland. Sunderland’s very particular situation has given us this opportunity and we’re deeply aware of that responsibility. Very aware

I think it's fairly easily to see how we'd think he's a complete tosser if things went sour again with the club. He's an arrogant man who takes no shit, he's always going to rub people up the wrong way.
Bit harsh James. It's cos he's a Tory isn't it?

:cool::cool::cool:

So it’s always been a club that I’ve been somewhat fond of from an early age — for some reason I’ve always had an antipathy towards Newcastle. I mean that wasn’t a determining factor in this, but it does mean I’ve always had a slight soft spot for Sunderland because I’ve always found Newcastle to be a rather arrogant club.

Great read but if the mags had a owner saying that we would laugh and say listen to that bull, bit like when colback, yedlin etc went there and chatted shit.

Not saying he doesn't mean it but that's the only bit I took with a pinch of salt. They have done so much engaging with the media, it's really good to see.

It's clear that when he says it's not just about results that they are planning on winning fans over by actually involving them on the club even if it's just letting them know what's happening.

I reckon he would have been shocked at how many people were being paid to do very little.

The comment about the mags wasnt needed IMO.
Yes, yes it f***ing was. We’ve been on the end of their PR shite for years. Oh and its true from my experience

I think it's fairly easily to see how we'd think he's a complete tosser if things went sour again with the club. He's an arrogant man who takes no shit, he's always going to rub people up the wrong way.
And more importantly he couldnt give a fuck what you or I think of him

Strange that some of the Oxford fans seem unsure about Methven. Not too sure what the issue was there but from everything I've seen and heard of him since coming to SAFC he seems very impressive. Obviously we need it backed up by results on the pitch in time but he's started as well as we could hope.

Also love how the two of them never thought they'd end up owning a club this big. I was thinking the other day that they must just walk onto the SoL pitch and think "fuck me, we own this!". Massive challenge for them but at least we know they're driven, determined to make a success of it and will be open with the fans even if things go badly at any stage. The timing of our drop into league one has worked out very well for them, and we desperately needed owners with access to funds but who also appreciate the need to genuinely reconnect with the fans and give us a reason to believe again. Don't believe in fate, and in true SAFC fashion it might all go to shit, but I think this is going to be a pretty exciting ride
I bloody hope so mate. These lads have impressed me so far. Sounds like they are determined to get the club back to what we all fell in love with in the first place. Haway the lads!

This bit struck me. Just smacks of the lazy shite the club has become....

The second bridge is having a proper pre-season plan. When we arrived there were no pre-season games planned! It’s a shambles. Fortunately, it’s still May! So hopefully we’ll change that. I mean that’s just bizarre; I don’t understand that. There’s a trip booked for Portugal, but no matches booked. I don’t understand that. I’d understand them doing it one way or the other, plan a pre-season or hold off in case the new owner doesn’t like Portugal. But not book a trip out there and neglect to book any matches.

For the first time in years it feels like we have owners who give a shit just as much as we fans do. That was always the underlying issue with Short. He cared very little, his ambition, his passion was never there for us to see. These guys have said the same things we fans have been saying for years about the club. They're coming in to make a change and to make it successful again.

They're very lucky in so much that we have such a large fan base, they don't need to build that up. The fans will always come when there's some semblance of care and effort on the pitch and in the boardroom. Very minor changes are already making a huge difference to the club and us fans. I feel like I trust these guys to get it right. I never felt that with Short. I always thought we were 24 hours from another catastrophe, manager sacking, players going on strike, scandals in the media. Whilst Charlie is a PR guru he's being honest with us and not trying to bullshit us, he's called Short out, he's mentioned what's wrong with the club, he's laid the gauntlet down to agents and players already, and I find it hard to not believe him when he says all that. It may well be calculated and planned but it's honest and true all the same.

This new season card campaign push is also another masterstroke for me. The simplicity of the slogan is genius. I'm bang up for this season now!

Great read! Thanks.

"In some ways, me being up here was part of the DD. I was able to make an initial diagnosis on the club itself, as an outsider. I diagnosed it to be a sick club, but not terminally ill."

I'd love to know more about what bits he considered were sick.
Probably the fundamentals. The owner lost interest and the club was at rock bottom but we have everything in place to successfull we just need the team on the pitch and everything will follow. We have been crying out for years to have football people in charge of the club and it sounds like we finally have it. Good times ahead I suspect. It’s been a week and you can already see the change in people’s attitudes because of these two blokes. Hope to god it all works out and I genuinely think it will
