That's a cracking trip. I've played Carnoustie quite a bit and it's definitely a bit too difficult for me. Also played the Kings and Queens which are lovely courses in a wonderful setting but not played the Castle (or any at St Andrews).
Castle was great, never played on greens like them they had some horrendous slopes if you were in the wrong place. You really have to think about your approach shots. There's about six holes right along the coast and they are right on the cliff tops. Views were amazing. 17 an 18 are great finishing holes 17 you were hitting from one side of a cliff over a bay to green on the other side of a cliff. I'd thoroughly recommend playing it. Carnoustie played up to its reputation there was a really strong wind as well. Couldn't imagine how hard it would be when they lengthen the rough for the open.

They've actually softened the slopes on some of the greens on the Castle since it opened as some of the slopes were utterly ridiculous but I'm not surprised by your comments from the opinions of others. Carnoustie is just utterly brutal.

You have to go to St Andrews, it's brilliant. The New, Jubilee and Eden courses are excellent and good value. They would cost more if they were stand alone courses somewhere else. The Old course isn't too shabby either but that's obviously not as good value. The Castle seems to divide opinion, I think it's great visually but I've played it twice and found it every bit as difficult as Carnoustie. I'd say you have to be a canny hand to get maximum enjoyment, which unfortunately I'm not.

Even if you can't get on the Old Course it's worth it for the others. Although If you don't mind playing with strangers it's quite easy to turn up and queue for a game on the Old , I've read you have to get up at 3am to get in the queue, but when I went I turned up at about 12 and I was playing by 2. You don't actually stand in a queue either you just pay your cash and hang around the 1st and the starter will find you when it's your turn. It's not a bad place to hang around watching everybody shitting themselves on the tee, even though they have target quarter of a mile wide.

The town itself is very pleasant as well. A good option if you are on a budget is staying in the uni halls of residence when the students are on holiday. You get a basic but clean room and the breakfasts are superb. Not suggesting you're a pauper but some of the accomodation in St Andrews is a bit pricey.

I've actually been to St Andrews loads but never played any of the Links Trust courses! I know what you mean by watching golfers shitting themselves on the first as I've seen a pro in The Open top an iron off the first tee. The town does have a good atmosphere and is a cracking place to socialise after playing golf as I have played the Dukes and Crail.

I'm doing those two in July, not played either, looking forward to it although I suspect The Duke's will be a bit of a slog. How do you find them ?

We had a buggy at The Dukes and it is probably best to use one even though I don't like them as there are some quite considerable elevation changes. We played the newer Craghead(?) course at Crail and it was very tricky. To get close to pins you really had to use the contours on and around the greens. There always seemed to be a bunker where you really wanted to hit the ball. The Dukes was a bit of a slog but the Crail course was good fun.

Played heworth this morning after having too much whiskey the night before, shaking like a f***ing tree on the first which must have helped my first drive find the trees.

Farted my way through holes 2 to 7 at 2 over par then fell to pieces. Ended up with a 82.

Not a member anywhere currently need to sort my shit out and join somewhere thinking Chester-Le-Street as it's the cheapest for my age

So when my mate said his lass bought him a groupon deal and asked is if I wanted a free round? Jumped at it then he said it was at Roseberry  I'm expecting it to be better than it was 10-12 years a go but the comments on footgolf have me worried.... and the hills f***ing hate steep uphill holes

First ever round of golf today and i couldn't believe the difference from the driving range, thoroughly enjoyed it tho, unfortunately when I was on the 18th I didn't realise at the time a fella had a heart attack on the adjacent hole, air ambulance came and ambulances, hopefully the fella will pull through

This happened to an old (ish) fella a couple of holes behind me one day and the poor bugger was too far gone by the time the ambulance got there which was within 5 minutes.
