16.4 Could be AXED!

They have to keep a positive spin on this but we all know it’s doomed to fail

not a single country is even contemplating the format and now this American and don’t forget the Caribbean t20 are in direct competition , it will be very interesting to see where players go

last summer a lot of the “big names” bailed out of the 16.4, bairstow and stokes for two , in mid tournament to go to the Caribbean

It’s never convinced me it will be a format that will bring a “new audience” to the cricket and by alienating its current audience, that was never going to succeed

I think you definitely have a point, as on one hand the national team across all 3 formats performing brilliantly.

But at the same time domestically the calendar too squeezed, but cricket is this country far from wrecked by any means imo.

The talent pot clearly there as well as the feel good factor created by Key, McCullum and Stokes.

This is the crux for me. It was always about marginalising the counties outside the big 5. The ECB wont be happy till they have the established test ground counties only and some manufactured franchises playing front and centre with the counties in some 2nd tier tournament.

I heard George Dobell discussing that on the Cricket Collective and if I’m honest, to me that reads like someone saying the right things from a marketing perspective but making manoeuvres behind the scenes to future proof the county game over this competition.

I genuinely feel like the right people are running the game now in Thompson and Gould.

The key I feel @brandon is the arrival of this new American league. Jason Roy has bailed out already and I very much expect the usual t20 wanderers will be off there as well

The 16.4 mantra of “best v best” I feel will be shown as the utter bollocks it always was

Then of course the Caribbean premier league is also on , and last season a lot of the stars bailed out of the 16.4 to go there

So imo we will see the second tier T20 players from the counties in the 16.4

However that will clearly not be the “best v the best”

The strength of the current England team will be largely a result of the infrastructure 10-15 years ago. Albeit run by a massive twat in Giles Clarke, the worst administrator in the history of English cricket.

Well thats a little confusing because im sure taunton isnt a *hip* enough place to have a team and whilst bristol is, iirc bristol is in somerset but used by gloucester and Gloucester isnt a sexy enough county to have a city team.

Anyhow, thats enough of your nonsense

The County Ground at Nevil Road in Bristol is in what was traditionally and remains as far as cricket is concerned Gloucestershire as it’s north of the river. Somerset did play at the now gone Imperial Ground on the south side.

And there is county cricket’s problem in a nutshell quite well illustrated. The old counties it is based on aren’t even that familiar these days to its supposed staunchest defenders on a thread that is specifically about how they must be defended.

Possibly fair point mate, however what I do know 18/24 months ago, they were many posts saying too much short format cricket was bad for our test team as players were now playing too many shots and didn’t have the right technique or mentality to build an innings in test cricket

Gone really quiet on that front and some of the shots learnt in white ball cricket are now been used more and more in our test team and recently playing more shots has clearly enhanced our test team

Let’s hang fire to see the Ashes before being totally on board with , what can be reckless batting

I’m all for attacking but there are periods when just hanging fire a little can lead to more as a day goes on

I think it’s more than fair to say cricket fans prefer 20 overs to a hundred balls.

Pretty obvious that is the case tbh, as easier to follow and understand as T20 played all around the world.

nothing to do with what I just said

this tournament would be no more popular on here if it was 20 overs

it has absolutely nothing to do with Durham, we have nobody to support or any cricket to watch
