The Fishing Thread

What stage of the tide is best for The Wherry?

Cheers
You can fish the wherry both high and low water
Off the cliffs i've fished couple hours high tide then a few hours tide going out
The wherry quey is a low water mark
you can walk down the path onto the little beach and you cannot miss it .
There's an old website called the Marsden Banner Group which is worth a look a lad drew a map of the fishing marks from north row ends down to jackie's beach .

I can’t find that link to the marks. Do you have a link you could share?

There's a bit on there about Alan Chapmans 28lb cod from the White Rock on there.

I knew Alan pretty well from when I used to hang around Dave Bolams Tennicks in my teens when I was as keen as mustard, unfortunately he recently passed away. No one knew the marks around Whitburn as well as Alan, had an unbelievable knowledge of every rock around that part of the coastline. They called him the Whitburn Ghost, as you'd be fishing down there in the dead of night, and all you'd hear is "Owt happenin" and he's stood next to you - he just appeared out of nowhere. He got loads of people

After he died, Andy Rutherford sold all his gear to buy a bench thats being put on top of Whitburn cliffs in honour of "The Whitburn Ghost".

Lenny from South Shields is reporting he hooked a MONSTER cod.

He has had plenty of double figure fish but this one was much bigger. He estimates it was 18 to 20 pounds.

He was on the cliffs near Marsden about 70 feet above the water and on his own.

He could not get the fish’s head out the water and he knew he had no chance of getting the fish up the cliffs.

He has posted video and photos on his shops Facebook page.

His video is a bit sweary as he is clearly gutted at losing the fish and I don’t think anyone is that sensitive but I mention it just in case.

You should hear me when I lose a decent one.🤣
Cracking thread this.

If anything losing a decent fish like that makes you want to go back as you know they are out there.

Remember losing a big Pike last year, it took off and was still running and dropped the bait. Just knew it was a big one.
Wound in put the rod down and didn’t exactly say, “never mind will have another go.”
🤣🤣
More like #£&&*/; &*(==. Arghhhh.🤣

How would you get that out if high on a cliff top?
Just a case of hauling it up or do you have nets that can drop?

Feel for the lad. Gutted.

They call it hand balling. Basically you lie down on the grass and lift it up just using the line.

70 foot cliffs at night is a no no for me and my fishing mate.

Plus the cliffs in that area are well dodgy. They are eroded so badly the council recently did major road works to move the coast road back away from the cliffs.

We’ve been boat fishing round there are there are caves under the cliffs.

Every few years we get a big fall that erodes the cliffs further.

Further to this there things called drop nets you can lower down to get fish but I have never seen anyone in the north east use one

Is that Davey Bolam who has the boat in the marina?

Aye fished with Chappa once on the cliffs above white rock. 4 fish in 4 casts for over 20lb. Used to show Freddie Ventress the ropes.

Enjoyed this. See a lot of Mullet in SW Scotland when I'm Bass fishing. Tried fishing for the once in the Isle of Man at Douglas harbour, we groundbaited with bread and there were some absolute beasts in the shoal. They'd basically eat every bit of bread, go up to your bread bait with the hook in it, sniff it and leave it
