The Fishing Thread

Correct Mate. Evidently it’s the curse of the full moon.
We were on a boat trying to beat the salt. Sad seeing so many dead fish.

What a place though, no rosds or people and just us on a small boat travelling and stopping to fish.
A lad put a video on FB of the tide coming in around the Bristol channel over the weekend, frightening how fat it came in, a 15 metre tidal range in 6 hours.

Cracking fish that.

I got a little whiting the other day. About 7 inches long. I didn’t weigh the poor little thing but at least it went back safely.

Got it on a two hook flapper with size 1 hooks and tiny little fish (whiting) baits.

It seems they are cannibals.

Small fish all over at the minute.

I did for a good few years and fished mostly small waters.

I loved tying my own flies and have a tackle box with loads of hares ears, herl, foam, legs you name it and loads of wire and hackles and all the tools too.

But I’m back sea fishing now.

Stinking the house out and taking up a full drawer in the freezer with worm, crab, Bluey, cart, mackerel and mussel.

Always making new rigs though and trying to improve my catches.
Will be going Pike fishing Wednesday.
Despite a disappointing trip last week on the Broads I learnt a lot mate.

Talking to a few fisherman yesterday on the local reservoir where I bailiff.
Ironically they were all from where I was fishing on the broads and commented how bad that was last week.
The weather though was incredible and warm during the daytime.

Had my first Cod session for about 7 years (working away all week is a killer!) on Monday night.
Lovely Northerly groundswell running on Sunday which had died off completely.

Dusted my trusty Mk1 Apollo off and headed to Roker Pier for low water at 6pm. When I got down, there was a really good SE sea running, pushing by a strong Southerly breeze. Unfortunately, I couldn't get any fresh bait, so bait was squid, frozen blacks and some cart.

Plonked myself on my favourite mark on the end and got blasted for 5 hours by a wind that definitely wasn't forecast.

Result after 5 hours - 3 small haddock and 1 whiting, not one codling bite which was really disappointing given the conditions. Saying that, I would have felt more confident with fresh lug.

Good to be out though, only 2 other lads on the pier but they left about 9pm

I hope you enjoyed your session mate and at least you didn’t blank.

As an aside I had an Apollo, a sad tale as I had one of the original Jupiters but one night we had been fishing the rock marks along from Marsden and on returning to my mates car he shut the rear hatch onto the ferrule of my rod cracking it.

I replaced it with the Apollo.

Love mine. I'd love a new rod, some lovely bits of kit out there but I couldn't justify the expense while I've got my Apollo because it's such a great fishing rod for the North East coast.

Do you use a multiplier or a fixed spool mate?

It’s rare to see multipliers these days with most people using fixed spool.

I used to use Abu. I had the 7500, 7000 and the Mag Elite.

I use a Diawa fixed spool now.
I've noticed the change to fixed spools / braid , i've still got a conoflex blast with a penn 535 .
Would like to change rod and reel but don't get out much

Yeah, they're not for me. Use fixed spools with braid for my plugging for Bass but I still like my mono and multiplier for other fishing.

I've still got two 7000s and an Abu 12 that I used to use on the rock edges but use a Slosh now.

I tried a mates of mine but couldn't get away with it, just too big and cumbersome for me, I like the feel of a multiplier being close to the rod if you know what I mean
I much prefer a multiplier for casting. I prefer using my thumb on the spool rather than pinning some braid to the rod. I use a thumb stall thingy.

Another Pike session.
Blanked today but beautiful surroundings and weather.
Not a cloud in the Sky.
Lovely sunset and water up another foot. 5 feet to go to normal level.

Note bale arm off, and rear fox bobbin holding line and fox bite alarms set.
I use a transmitter and can wear it around my neck, picks up bites on either rod.

Watched a YouTube video about lubing fixed spool reels so I got mine out and did a quick lube service of my three fixed spool jobs.

@Swindon On Tour - those photos reminded me about something I do when fishing.

I like to have the handle on the other side of the reel and wind right handed.

When fly fishing I cast right handed but as soon as I hook up I put the rod in my left hand so I can control the line and or fly reel with my right hand.

Always done it and really not sure why.

Strange isn’t it that we all have different preferences.
I am right handed but have always preferred the handle on the left.
Need the right hand to hold those big fish with the rod 🤣🤣

Tight lines mate. The contrast to yesterday. Pissing down today.😞

I actually thought that when I was typing it - I never catch anything heavy enough to need my dominant arm!

😥

Been out buying some cold weather today and we stopped off to check some north east rock marks that we fancy trying.

Hopefully to get into some decent cod.
