ODI World Cup

emotional connections to the game
- supporting your team
- appreciation of good play regardless of who does it
- disliking your rivals and hoping they do poorly

All three are valid. Some do one, some do all three, some do a different combination of two of the three

To each their own.
Aye that’s true , personally put the first one above all others, and like to think most should do the second, can’t really be bothered with the last one.

That’s not what’s it was about at all.

My own team (England) where my emotions are invested were out.

So I see no problem accepting any good cricket on show after that from whichever team produces it.

Rather than having a wanking competition about who hates Australia or India more

Or the poster I quoted who spends 50% of his posts saying who he f***ing hates all the time.
The resilience and professionalism of this Australian team can only be admired.

Ironically they were better before they became the "cricketing superpower" they are today, or at least before the IPL cash cow really took off

Very true

I’m all 3

I just think Australia were better. India were 2nd best

They lost their first 2 then won every single game

Best team won, that’s not churlish I don’t think, it’s fair! India played some good cricket but cracked when it battered

You actually saw in the NZ chase in the semi. They were starting to panic, I’m not surprised at Al Australia won, I even had 20 quid on them

Well yeah that kind of my point, of course we all passionate and want us to stuff them every time when we play them.

But surely we can still be gracious enough, to appreciate innings like Maxwell’s the other day, appreciate the fighting qualities of say Steve Waugh, the entertainment people like Adam Gilchrist provided, and like you say the fighting qualities and never say die Australia mentality in sport.

You can be extremely passionate for your own team but still appreciate the sporting qualities of another.

Well at least that’s my outlook although seems I am in the minority :D

Yeah I think you right mate when the pressure on Australia came up trumps so it’s more than fair to say what you saying.

I was merely saying in response to you earlier up until to the final India played very good cricket and it would be churlish not to accept that.

That’s not saying they a better team just that they played some very good cricket in this tournament

Oh aye absolutely aye

I always had a feeling this would happen

I was glad Australia got to final as I felt they had the best chance of beating them

Saw glimpses in their first game

It’s just strange set up for the tournament

There’s basically absolutely no pressure until the last 2 games

It’s why I was kind of ambivalent about it till it mattered

Kind of shows how bad we were, that we couldn’t qualify from that set up

Yes, imagine being emotionally invested in a team sport.

I hate the Aussie cricket team. A hatred built up over many many years of being battered by them and even more years of putting up with their shithousary, cheating, bullshit and arrogance. Bollocks to every single last one of them.

Still f***ing hilarious watching them destroy the dreams of India's cretinous fans though.

No need to sit on the fence, my friend 😂

Yeah get your point up to a point, certainly less pressure in group stages, although would not say no pressure.

There is always going to be pressure playing a World Cup in your own country especially in India.

Previously good teams can still go out in the group stages as we did in this one and were close too in 2019 where we had to win last few games to qualify.

But certainly get and understand your wider point that when the pressure on India wilted and have done before.

You know the game's up when Indian commentators start talking about "the rub of the green" going against Indian Cricket Team
What was sweet was Shastri or Bogle, crying during the match, that they have so many WC winning parties that they're going to have to cancel. Aww shame.
WTF is that?
This thread has had me in stitches. Bravo!
Against who? No pressure group games

If they’d had knock out cricket earlier They would have been eliminated earlier, they can’t handle the pressure

It’s a flaw in the format but there was no pressure on any of the games as they were always going through

Can’t agree
I like the cut of your jib! Here I thought, I couldn't stand them LOL

There were quite a few of us who did mention when the WC started that they would flatter to deceive in the groups but when the pressure was really on, they would shit their pants. More in hope than expectation granted, but lovely to see all the same. It's a shame that the Kiwis couldn't quite replicate what the Aussies did today in the semis. That was an absolute beat down the Aussies dished out. The only time they looked under pressure was entirely self inflicted at the start of their innings. Other than that, they handled the pressure situations better.
One of the main problems I saw today with the indian batting was their over reliance on their big hitters. In hindsight, smashing everyone in the groups did nothing to prepare them for any hardships. Aussies on the other hand lost heavily in their 1st game and then came out swinging after that. Pains me to say it, but they were tremendous this WC. Best team won.

I always thought Rohit Sharma was canny, until he took the piss out of the Dutch. Went down in my estimations after that.
I've had to go out but apparently India didn't stay to applaud Australia lift the trophy?
Really? That's hard to believe that. I didn't watch the presentations, so don't know. But that is actually a big no no in terms of sportsmanship that. I mean I know none of their fans stayed to at least show some class and humility, but if the team didn't either, that's next level arrogance.

I had Australians as favs today

If it was a league format then India would win every year but not in knockout games

Well totally get passion for your own team as stated.

Can’t be bothered hating others when result makes no difference in the slightest to my team.

Is it passion hating teams when your team not playing??

Can you not be passionate like for your team but still appreciate good cricket from others?
You can mate, but there are a couple of sporting teams which the passion spills over to somewhat of a hatred. Mags no.1 but the Indian cricket team aren't that far behind for me. I applaud your sentiment, but nar, fuck 'em. Deserved everything they got today. Just seeing Kohli's twatish face close to tears was nearly enough to wash the stench of supporting the Aussies today.

Yeah but they have world class players so they’ll win games to get to knockout

Winning home world cups isn’t for everyone marra ;)

I was just so impressed with Aussies in semis and here

I mentioned earlier but I’m sick of PR words like intent and style of play, especially when chasing

What’s the score, what’s the conditions, how best to we win this game, simple as that

Look at the contrasting way head and lab played, that’s brilliant. That’s 50 over cricket

It’s an amazing format like. It’s really really hard

England were great for a period no doubt but this idea it’s just a linger t20 has proven to be nonsense and was kind of proved to be nonsense in 2019 too

South Africa are a good example here, flat as a pancake they were unreal, but anymore than that when they had to use their brain, they just couldn’t do it

I’ve not massively enjoyed the tournament but I think it’s proved what a tough, skillful, specialist format 50 over cricket is

Nowhere to hide

Haha yeah they’re canny bad like

I don’t mind hating them, well more in test cricket, which is all I care about, the fact Kohli and co love test cricket really hates the format m
And the rivalry we have with them is great and gets bums on seats

Like you need villains in sport if you know what I mean

I agree tho I was rooting for Aussies today, but I do think they’re a better side personally

Missing out there marra. Both me da and I revelled in every bit of India's misfortune today. Was brilliant. Not quite as good as supporting our own teams but good none the less.

Double like if I could.

Great assessment that. It's a crying shame that it's a dying format.

AI depiction of virat standing next to an empty cabinet 😉
